Am thinking of going to Mogadishu this summer, have heard they have some good all inclusive deals and the Hotel we are looking at is very close to were the 2 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were shot down in 1993, so we can do a bus tip to look around the ruins, in-fact we can do a bus trip everyday to look around the ruins,

This might sound like a stupid question
Yep it does.

Cyprus is probably safer than Blackpool or Bognor Regis but you didn't ask about them did you?

Protaras is actually quite nice, it's not too close to ayia nappa where it's a bit crazy! You could always venture there for a night if you wanted to experience it. I went once last year but it almost ended me. I'm only 34 too and I'm partial to a good night out!

The second hotel (Malama Beach Village) is actually in Kapari, just north of Protaras - don't know if that has any bearing on your thoughts?

Depends what you want OP.
IMO Pafos is little Britain, full of Ex pats, (they all like a good moan), food and drink is expensive compared to Limassol.
If you go in summer the eastern end of the island, Ayia Napa area, is very hot compared to Limassol and Pafos.
If you want something less commercialised have a look at Latchi and Polis, north coast, opposite Pafos, nice harbour, deserted beahes, well worth a visit even if you don't stay there.
There is more to Cyprus than beach holidays, take a trip into the Troodos mountains, the old Pafos to Troodos road is stunning, as are all the mountain roads, keep an eye out for motorbikes though!
A hire car or bike is a must!
It really does depend what you want, but having lived there, I'd always recommend Limassol as a base!
Too much trouble in Napa and I always found Larnaca a bit run down.

The biggest dangers is going on a guided tour and being bored to death with anti-Turkish propaganda.

Don't go to Limassol - it's a dive.

Paphos is lovely - I got married there.
Mate of mine got married in Paphos a few years ago. I thought it was lovely - hot, friendly and just anglicised enough for everything to be really easy. OH wasn't as keen as me - she thought it was too anglicised and bit trashy, though she much preferred it to Limassol where she'd been previously which she too thought was a dive.

I think its location and strategic importance to the west help ensure its possibly the safest holiday destination in the world!

My wife had similar concerns to you, so I understand the thinking, especially as it is close to Syria.

Been twice, Limossol (with work) was a dive, Paphos (family holiday) was average, but for short haul winter sun it was one of limited options, just wish the general standard of restaurant food was better.

Like their occupation of the North of the country, which has been (and still should be) a stopper on their membership to the EU, the thousands of displaced citizens, the fact that the territory is ONLY recognised by Turkey, oh, and Turkey's history of human rights violations amongst their many failings.

Apart from those little things eh?

The rest of the country is lovely. It is worth a trip to TRNC if anything to see the mountainside fk you to the south, and to see the green zone, and the heavily militarised city of Famagusta.

We got married in Limassol in 2008, sadly it sounds like the place has become run down since then.

The area you're looking at is out of town. We stayed in the Hawaii Grand which I think is next door or a couple down from the one you're looking at. If you do go, please head across the road - there are 3 bars, Chesters, a russian bar and a little Cypriot place, there are a lovely couple who went so far out of their way to help out. Their garlic mushrooms are the best.

Have a chat with George - ask him about Famagusta, it used to be his home.

I get the impression Limassol is getting back on it's feet with Russian money (whether a British tourist would consider that a good thing or not is another matter).

Although Protaras sounds nicer, both hotel choices are out of town so I think we plumb for the best hotel and the winner has to be the St Raphael.

The final question - May or June? I read that June can get unbearably hot which would be an issue with 2 young children. On the other hand my wife is worried May will be iffy.

July/August are hottest.

I went to Protaras in 2000, nice. Went to Paphos last year, very ex-pat as already mentioned. The towns to the North of Paphos are excellent though, hire a speedboat for the day and chill.

Last year we stayed at Anna Apartments, we were a couple but I would say this place is very kid friendly, very quiet and not central (you do need a car). It is probably one of the nicest, cleanest and most friendly places I have ever stayed (the reviews on TA and the like tell the same story).

if you spoke with people who had seen their relatives shot dead in front of their kids whilst the bd Turks stole their homes , you may have a different view.

To be fair I am sure the Turkish Cypriots would say the same. Neither side has a monopoly on that carrot!
