Cyprus - is it safe?

This might sound like a stupid question but I am considering a family holiday in Cyprus, either Limassol or Protaras, in June.
I can't help but notice it is not very far from the coast lines of Syria and Lebanon, and also has issues over Turkey / Cypriot divides.
In the current climate is it possibly one to avoid, particularly with little ones?

seriously though - I have been going to the north for holidays and south for business for 25 years and would recommend it with the proviso that it is VERY hot in August and you have to get the children out of the pool from 12 to 4ish. Try the north for somewhere a bit different. It's easy to cross between the north and south these days. You used to have to pretend you were going over to the north for the day which was difficult with 3 kids and going for a week....

Very safe, I lived there for 3 years with work (in the RAF), if your worried about being so close to the surrounding countries bare in mind it's heavily protected with the 3 large UK Military bases.
The only bother I had was local Russian Mafia on a night out, where I ended up being glassed in the face, but that I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. That could have easily havened in the UK anyway.
I'd look to go Paphos if it was me.

It's Cyprus - one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, not Baghdad.
Don't go to Limassol - it's a dive.
Paphos is lovely - I got married there. Not tried Protaras yet.

Oh really? Was looking at the St Raphael Resort which gets great reviews. It's 20 minutes outside of Limassol to the East.Any particularly aspects of it divish?
Our hotel was acceptable, and had great reviews aswell, but the main street and area leading through and into Limassol is just....crap.
The town centre itself is......OK, but it's not a nice area in general - lots of boarded up shops and empty apartment/office blocks.
Like I say, this was 2013, soon after they were really in a hole financially so it may be a little better now. But I wasn't impressed.
Our hotel was AI and one night we went for a walk around to try and find a restaurant for somewhere different to eat. On the main strip about a 15min drive from Limassol centre, we found literally a few restaurants suitable for a meal. The rest were closed up or out of business. God knows what we'd have done if we were B&B/SC
However; if you like to stay in the hotel, and your hotel is a good one, it will be fine.
t, go paphos or pissouri for a laid back holiday. I live in Cyprus. For a holiday (family) I'd definitely recommend Paphos! It's quieter than the east side with the likes of Larnaca and nappa, but still loads to see and do. l would say limassol is worth a day trip, it's just 50 mins drive from paphos. Limassol has lots and lots of Russian money coming in at the moment, the new marina is thriving and attracts a lot of wealthy yacht owners. The whole sea front/strip is being redeveloped and will look amazing when finished. There are some great restaurants around the new marina and some fancy boats to look at. Limassol has lots of culture, there are some amazing restaurants tucked away in the old town. I'd stick the the west end of limassol as the east is quite tacky/touristy.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the hotel we were looking at happens to be in St Raphael on the East tip of Limassol.Is it safe? As safe as any other European City.

Any views on Protaras?
The St Raph is a very nice hotel, along with the four seasons. The st Raph and four seasons are at the very east end past the touristy bit where it starts getting "posher" again! You can just drive through the touristy bit. Limassol is a very long narrow city as you have probably seen from and pictures.
