Can I use current passport while applying for new one online

Need to organise a new passport, it has 4 months left.
I have to go away with work in the meantime.
I'm thinking of applying online, my question is

Can I use my existing passport while I am applying for my new one?

The details on the website are a bit sketchy. Government cutbacks and all that.

Or Do I have to send my old one back in?

You need to return your current one as part of the application process.

Ask your employer for a letter justifying a need for a second passport, typical reason would be applying for a visa while still needing to travel.

Having two passports can be very convenient.

yeah you send it back as part of the application

if you dont balls up the photos it should be back in around a week

You can get it same day in London,but you have to be there in person.
I started the application process on-line,posted the passport and photos off and the new one was delivered in six days.

This is the best recommendation, served me well for many years. If requiring visa's and such one passport can be sent away without restricting any other travelling you want to do.

However, on applying for a second passport earlier this month, with company letter etc I was asked to submit my current passport with the application !!!

Thanks people. Currently waiting for an answer on whether work wants to pay for speedy service or put up with me not being able to travel abroad (told them 3 weeks, just in case)
