It is my 40th at the end of the year and the wife and I have just booked flights to Japan (without kids) for 4 nights.

We arrive in Tokyo early on Friday morning and leave first thing on the Tuesday morning.

I want to experience more than just Tokyo so maybe visit Kyoto as well...

Obviously we are limited on time and perfectly understand we won't even scratch the surface but any advice on itineraries/what to do/where to go?

Cheers

4 nights isn't that long to be in Japan, especially if you want to get to other areas.

My favourite thing to do is walk across the rainbow bridge to Odaiba and see sights there - it will be busier at the weekend as it is the sort of place the locals go. Ginza and Harajuku is good for posh shops, Ginza especially, at the weekend they close the streets to vehicles and it is a nice atmosphere. You can combine Harajuku with the Meiji shrine.

Shibuya crossing is the icon Tokyo ccrossing, I usually go there and sit in the Starbucks overlooking it with a big coffee to combat the jetlag.

Recently discussed, lots of ideas here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Have fun, 4 nights is not enough, epecially if you can't beat the inevitable jetlag!

That's a whistle stop tour.

I'd recommend just basing yourself in Tokyo and taking day trips to see some of the other bits. Kyoto/Nara well worth seeing, and only a couple of hours on the Shinkansen. Other than that Nikko is quite close to Tokyo and is very pleasant. Possibly one night there or Hakone would give you the 'country' side...
