Thanks also for Purbecks suggestion and Pembrokshire which is a big drive but may be worth it. Have visited the Gower a few times and really liked it. I will investigate further.
You can't go wrong with any of those, but if you want more pointers in the Purbecks let me know.

Looked on Google maps and it looks really nice.

A few pointers would be great thanks.

Most tend to stop before they get to the really nice areas.

they can't resist Rhyl and Prestatyn :-)

Pembrokeshire - but not St David's.

Manorbier - mid way between Tenby and Pembroke.

Loads of lovely beaches including Barafundle Bay, Freshwater Eats & West and Stackpole Quay for something different.

Then there's loads of castles to explore and the coountryside is amazing.

Have been going there on hols since I was 4 and have been back at least onece a year every year since - I'm now 52!

Sunday lunch at Castlemead hotel to give SWMBO a break from cooking and say hello to Geoff & Lorna from us!

Used to stay here years ago but looks like its gone upmarket since then. - http://www.buttyland.com/

Thanks Tyre Tread

282 miles door to door :-)

Thats a fair journey but will have a look.
Can always break up the journey midway.

But a relative easy journey - A1 A14 M6 M42 M5 for 90% and A roads the rest.

True. Done it to the Gower but from Sheffield and just the M42 that was a pain.
Set off at 4am and I can miss all the traffic :-)

Had a further look and that area is beautiful with fantastic beaches. May be worth the journey.

As already suggested - The Purbecks and perhaps specifically down towards Swanage (not necessarily in Swanage itself although there are some good camp sites on the outskirts). Swanage provides your basic needs (if rather 'quaint' in a place where time forgot kind of way; this actually is the charm of Swanage)

Swanage bay is a good beach but Studland is better if you don't want to be on top of the tattoo brigade. Great walking and lots to do - Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove, Bovington Tank Museum, Monkey World and just a ferry ride or 30 minute journey and you're in Poole (although I'm not sure why I'd go there on holiday!)

We enjoyed the area so much when our kids were young we bought a holiday home there; only sold it a couple of years ago. Still head down there a couple of times a year to do a bit of MTB'ing as it's such a great area for that (and road riding).

Plus Tyneham, Arne, Brownsea Island, Kimmeridge, Old Harry's Rocks and Studland is much more than just the beach. Depending how old your kids are and what you like doing there's walking, twitching, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and sailing. And Wareham is surprisingly nice too.

And that's all within 30 minutes of Swanage.

I love Dorset , west bay , Lyme regis , bridport all lovely. There's a big site in west bay too. Im not a caravan owner though.

As above too , tenby is lovely and surrounding area. Dont accidentally tow the caravan into Tenby though , the roads are crazy small.

Another shout for North Devon/Cornwall.

Woolacombe is nice, as is Croyde and a little further along, Bude.

Spent many holidays/breaks down there as a kid, so much so we moved to Camelford (dump) for a couple of years. Wonderful scenery, lovely beaches and a rugged coastline. Pretty spectacular at times.

Morfa Nefyn is where I used to go as a kid :-)

Trying to sell it to the wife and kids (15,12 & 8) but I think they like the sound of DorSET.

Thanks sawman but think we want the more of the coves and rock pools that the SW and west of the country offer.

We spend lots of weekends on the east coast. Want a change for the main summer holiday.

certainly plenty of coves and rock pools in dorset!

and monkey world!!

I just wish the drive there was more pleasant - It took me all day to get to dorset from the midlands a few years ago - should have gone in the middle of the night!
