Looking to book a cheap and cheerful all inclusive for myself and Mrs Glocko in May.
With the Greek economy being on it's knees does that mean that things are cheap in the shops, bars and restaurants, or has it gone the other way with price hikes?

To be honest Greece has never been terribly expensive, but I wouldn't call it cheap, exactly. The Euro has fallen against the pound lately which will help a bit. A large beer is about 3 Euros where we go (Ionian).

We're already booked for May smile

I read bookings for this summer are 50% down on previous years so could be worth looking out for some last minute deals. They have until the end of June to sort the current mess out or they could be back to the drachma and be looking forward to an even cheaper holiday but might be worth taking an extra suitcase for your spending money.

Is it crazy to forward book in Greece then?

We usually book ourselves with ownersdirect.co.uk ,so no ABTA. You pay the owner, well, direct smile

Potentially pay deposit in Euros then find final amount is in Drachmas and nobody really knows how much or when....... Perhaps ask for a price in Sterling?

Greek hotels have done pretty well throughout the last six or seven years....I wouldn't expect massive savings.

We went to Athens last Autumn. It wasn't as cheap as we might have expected. The weakness of the Euro will help, but don't expect prices to be 'Eastern Europe' cheap.

Greece went from being cheap to relatively expensive overnight when they introduced the Euro, to the order of 30%. it's been going down hill ever since. The response to this from the resorts and restaurants alike was to increase their prices even further. Not been back since myself, shame really, but good prices for top hotels in europes biggest cities and resorts were being asked for by crappy 1 star beach hotels on the islands, no thanks, didn't mind slumming it on the cheap but wasn't paying top dollar to do it though.
I doubt prices have gone down, not in the mind set and possibly one of the reasons the country has gone down the pan, saying nothing of the practice of being registered for Gov jobs, drawing the salary but never actually going to work there, but working full time in the family taverna.....

Slight topic off-shoot:

Do I need a heated pool in Corfu in June, as far as I remember summer in Greece is hot hot hot, no?

I think the people who claim Greece isn't cheap need to try harder.

Last September we spent 3 weeks riding down from France to Greece via Italy. We spent 1500€ getting to Greece and 1500€ in the two weeks we were there.

Igoumenitsa: Hotel room, really nice with AC, check in 7am and breakfast 40€/night. Needed an early check in as we had an over night crossing. 1/4 chicken and chips 5€, large beer 2€.

Visited lots of other places, similar deals but room rates, hiring studios for 3 days at a time (usually) costing 20€/night. Okay, it was late September early October but the food was cheap, the accommodation clean and comfortable and the weather was fantastic.

Greece has really pushed the boat out in the last couple of years, we visited about 4 years ago and accommodation could be a bit grotty but now, everything seems to have been done up and has AC and TV's. Much better than I remember and I have been to Greece a hell of a lot.

OP, where are you thinking of going and what do you want from your holiday?

Plenty of 'cheap' places all around Greece...if you avoid the tourist traps / resort restaurants, bars. OP you mention wanting all inclusive, so not sure what the relevance is however...

Have you identified a particular location?

It's certainly cheaper than Greece. Having been to Greece and Poland in recent years, Poland was definitely cheaper.
