I have a survey at a dock in Johar, Malaysia, Just over the bridge from Singapore. It's a long way for one job and it's my first long Haul flight. Only worked as far as Nuremberg so far!
Anyway, flying Emirates as I hear it's free gin.
The site contact is meeting me and taking me to the dock from a hotel.
Where to stay? I like making the most of my time abroad abd will have plenty of time to nap on the plane.

Any knowledge will be appreciated. Nothing too expensive as every penny saved is one in my pocket.

If you want to save money check out maxwell food centre, chose the most popular hawker stalll and got a lovely Chinese 2 meat and noodle dish for about £4 and a 660ml bottle of beer for £3. Downside is there is no air con so if it's overly humid day then forget it!

Clarke Quay is a new area, and is a nice enough sport for beers and something to eat. I have not been for a few years, but started off staying at Conrad at Suntec, but only because my office was there. I then moved to Fullerton near Boat Quay - which is a nice hotel, and again decent bars and restaurants around. I have not been since they built the "cricket stump" hotel, but that would be where I would try and stay next time.

Crazy Horse at Orchard Towers is a must for some local culture if you have not been before.

If you find yourself at Maxwell food centre the only place to consider going is Tian Tian chicken rice. Widely considered to be the best chicken rice in singapore -their national dish

even gordon ramsey featured there briefly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv_dhSi-IEw

but yes, plenty of eating must be done in hawker centres if you're in singapore. Very hard to get a bad meal.

Clarke Quay is a good location, I reckon. Pretty central, bars and restaurants, MRT station. Walking distance to Chinatown, Boat Quay, Orchard Road, Raffles, Marina Bay Sands, if you so wish. Will probably fancy a cold Tiger when you get there though. Haha.

It's Johor by the way. wink

Other than hotels.

Clarke key's fine for an evening or two, if you want a good bit of history do a round island tour, but you may not have time.

Go to the top of the Marina Bay Sands for a good view of the city and the GP track.

Botanic and Bay gardens are nice, if you're into that.

And of course Raffles.

Make full use of the taxis, amazingly inexpensive.

Taxi’s are odd in SG, its as though they dissolve in water. As soon as it starts to rain (and it will), they all disappear.

The MRT system is the best in Asia, IMO. Never felt the need to use a taxi. Are they actually that cheap?

You should try getting a public bus out there, now that really is cheap! Think it was about 60p to go about 1.5 miles( a short bit of the route was the F1 circuit too which you miss out seeing on the underground) I was one of the uncool freaks who paid with loose change though and not the card system

Used the buses a fair bit. Stayed up in the north the first couple of times I went, so the buses were more convenient for some things.

Don't want to come across as a show off, but I had a card. thumbup

They are really good though, you can just jump on the first bus you see and get off if you see something that takes your fancy. Much easier than knowing where you're going. Haha. Probably need a bit more than two days to be doing that though.

But it means you can go wandering anywhere, there'll always be a bus stop nearby and it's bound to stop near an MRT station at some point. You can't really get 'lost' there. Unless you go searching through a bit of jungle looking for a princes abandoned mansion...

Cheers gents. It's a roody long trip for a 2 hour site visit. I think controlling myself with the free booze in the lounge and plane will be my biggest issue!
I have a day to myself on Monday. What can I do with myself? I would definitely like to view the culture, however see the new fancy bits too. Got a cheap room in the Carlton near Raffles.
The food halls sound like my sort of place.

If you get chance head to the Fullerton hotel and face marina by the bay, walk towards it and head under the bridge ( part of the f1 track) and there is a viewing platform. Get there for 8pm as they do a laser show and you get a fantastic view of the city

Not that good a view of the laser show from there. Much better from in front of the shopping mall connected to the MBS.

And further to the earlier taxi comments, we paid $7 from MBS to our hotel north of Clarke Quay. That's cheap to me. How far would a black cab take you across London for £3.50?

And of course they're busier when it rains.
