The vast need to be in the car with you as well, not in the boot.

Also, if you were to break down and the car needs to be repatriated, the tow company will need the V5.

Happpened to me twice and both times it's been asked for.

How are you meant to put one on before you get out? Have you seen how hard they are to put on.

Yep, spot checking UK reg cars outside Calais port this morning. First time I've ever seen it in dozens of trips to Euroland but obviously does go on.

Yup this was me yes With a broken prop shaft.

Except I was hopping about on the hard shoulder, unable to put my vest on, unable to hear the French control centre properly on the emergency phone. I was a behaving like a totally useless f***ing tt.

Myself and Lady H are off 'sur le contingyong' this summer in an MX-5, by the time we've loaded up on bulb kits, hi-viz jackets, warning triangles, breathalysers and what-have-you there'll be no room for fecking luggage.

You need to have the V5 with you as the police might ask for it....as I found out when I was stopped in Switzerland for doing 18 km/h over the limit and had to cough a mere CHF 480!

When I last drove to France, some old bloke driving off the ferry next to me was wearing a hi-viz. He's mis understood the rules and thought you had to be wearing the vest at all times.

Made me chuckle.

Ian
Hahaha Ian, that made me chuckle also. He didn't have a breathalyser in his mouth too?

Need a vest for all the passengers:

Hi Viz Vests

If you breakdown or heaven forbid are involved in an accident you will need to get out of the vehicle and stand at the roadside or on the hard-shoulder if on a motorway. The French authorities are very strict that people stood outside the vehicle on motorways especially are wearing "Hi Visibility" clothing such as a vest that fits over you clothing or a high viz jacket.

That's everyone you the driver and also all of your passengers. So if a family of four are travelling in the car then you should each have a hi viz. Also these need to be carried inside the cabin of the car not the boot so you can put it on before you get out, though in practical terms I presume most will be putting it on as they are getting out. However the police are strict and if they see you stood with the boot up rummaging round trying to find the vests under all your suitcases and beach balls they will very likely issue you with a fine.
I have the vests in the storage bins in the boot of an estate car. So if I have access to the boot from the cabin I should be fine?

I've just left them in the packets and wedge them in either side of the screen corner , it's easier and visible .
I doubt the gendarmes would be impressed with you climbing around inside your boot if you get pulled , that said I've never been pulled in a dozen years of a few visits a year in all sorts of vehicles .

Better in the cabin if you can. Glovebox, door pockets or under the seats.

" gendarmes sont les plus grande branleurs dans le monde"

enjoy your trip

Been to N ring for the past 5 years, and never been pulled. Don't carry a vest, warning triangle, UK badge, light deflectors or anything.

Last year one of our pary got pulled for speeding in France and they never checked his car for the above bits......

then you were lucky , it all depends on the gendarme at the time if you get pulled by one who sticks by the book ,and you don't tick everything in his box you are looking at fines

equipment is cheap enough , why take the risk ?
