Heading over to Melaka for work after Easter and wondering who PHers would choose...?

KLM: LHR-AMS-KUL, B777-200, seat pitch doesn't look great, good safety record though. Not flown with them before.

SIN: LHR-SIA-KUL, B777-200, good seat pitch, full cabins though, and means passing over destination twice each way!

MAS: LHR-KUL direct, A380 (most likely), possibility of slightly emptier aircraft but then there's last year in the back of my mind.

I hate flying enough as it is, so a good safety record usually sways it over price or flight duration (to a point). Alternatively, what are the Qatar/Emirates/Ethad options like?

Never flown any of them but they're all main flag carriers so I'd have though, barring recent events with pilots supposedly wandering off course, the safety record for all 3 would be pretty much equal?

Not sure if it's a possible alternative but a potential airline to look at would be Thai, might need to change at Bangkok though, but they were faultless and offered fantastic service when I flew them a few years back, even in Economy.

I've flown with MAS on the 380 to KL a few times, very impressed. Only cattle class but I got lucky with 4 seats to myself once, 3 seats on another trip. No complaints at all. I'd go that way again. Direct flight for me is a priority as I hate flying as its so bloody boring.

Have flown with Malaysian and Singaporean airlines. Both very acceptable - and on the plus side, the inflight food is actually quite tasty!

I flew MAS two years ago on the A380 and it was as pleasant an experience as you can expect from a 14hr flight. I had also been thinking that in light of last year's events they'd a)be extra vigilant about safety, and b)possibly be less packed than Singapore (who I flew with a year ago). However, I am an exceedingly nervous flyer and MH370 and MH17 still stick in my mind (irrationally, I know...).

Doesn't SIN still fly the 380 to LHR?

Left Field is Emirates on 2 380s and could stop over in Dubai for a peek.

Living in KL I do this a lot.
MAS is direct from London. The A380 is awful in Business class far to big a cabin, and always some one moving around, I use it on Business as my Employer is a major share holder I have to fly MAS, never had a good nights sleep. I am told that they have partitioned the cabin and this is no longer true, but it was last time I flew.

Never been economy on the 380 but MAS international economy is generally OK and the old 747 were fine. MAS domestic economy is bad, poor food and people coughing every where I refuse to fly it, and use Air Asia. Don't get wound up about either of the incidents last year.

My problem is I try to avoid London because of the immigration delays for the wife, and I do use regional Airports for private trips, if you want to go from a regional airport KLM is a good way.

I've just booked Qatar business class into Manchester, good connections and stop over is OK, I (and most expats I know) tend to use Qatar when paying ourselves the MAS A380 in business is nearly twice the price, Just got Qater for 200 pound against 4,300 on MAS.

For tourist class Qatar is great as they give a free 10Kg in luggage for sport s equipment, my daughter uses this as she is in Uni in Europe, amazing what goes in th e Ski bag.

Driving up from Sing I do not recommend you even think about, cross border hire cars here are a mess and if you do have an incident you will take ages to sort it out.

Fly to KL Airport and you are nearly half way to Malacca its on the right side of KL, just get a taxi down should be around 40 pound.

Another sugestion is to fly sing and then get a coach to malacca they are loads of them departing singapore very nice coaches Ive done it for a short Break from Singapore, you can even get a hotel deal and return coach if you wanted and just use local taxis to get to and from the job.

http://www.singaporemalaysiabus.com/malacca.html

Ive used 5 star and they were fine.

If you decide to do sing on the bus, then be aware that you will have to unload all your luggage of the bus and carry it through custom passport and you will be very lucky to get a trolley, as I said into kl one passport control and then taxi. And as I say I've have actually done every option at one time or another.

Just a quick update - work has booked self and colleague on MAS direct to KUL on the A380. However, I'm on the upper deck and he's on lower (both economy). Any likelihood that the flight will be under-populated enough to switch seats around at check-in?

I fly London - KL - London with Malaysia Air around five or six times a year and never seen it 90% empty, sometimes 25% empty.
