I've been relatively lucky that my parents used to have a holiday club membership but stopped travelling, so were happy to sell on the use of it below cost. But, no more, so these days I need to get creative and find affordable places to holiday in.

So far, we've tried a Yelloh site in France, and it's been very good, and gone to mobile home and camp sites in the UK.

I have only recently discovered the Med properly and I would love to explore more. But it'll need to be by car or budget airline, and at self catering, camping or budget hotels.

Are there any locations or establishments that others have visited on a shoestring which are worth a visit?

Shoestring and The Med are not normally words that I expect to see in the same sentence.
I would say that your best bet is to drive down through France and even into Spain and head for one of the many camp sites.
If you are happy to tent it, go for that. Alternatively, many sites have statics.

Indigo campsites are pretty good mid range, they don't usually have a pool but a good situation instead.

Yelloh is good.

We found places by finding nice sites through the likes of Eurocamp and booking directyes

Try southern France (Perpignan area) rather than the Cote d'azure. Cheaper and less crowded but still beach with mountains inland. Have you thought about the Vendee or Quiberon peninsular? Great beachs for the kids and less time spent traveling.

Near Quiberon in Carnac camping les menhirs is a nice site, and there's a great beach with a tidal island a short walk east along the beach.

Thanks guys, some great ideas to explore.

What's the sea like on the Atlantic Coast of France? I went to Portugal a few times as a teenager and the sea could be pretty wild.

It can be wild if stormy, surfings popular biggrin But during the summer break it's generally okay and cleaner than the med.

Some great atlantic beachs, sand dunes backed by pine forest.

Yes, but this is a good thing imo.

My wife and I did south of France cheaply for 10 days but it was over 10 years ago.

WE flew Easyjet to Nice, cheap hire car and then camped.
We did take our camping gear with us, God knows how we got under the baggage allowance.
Now my wife takes 20kg for a weekend!

We stayed 7 days in Agay and then 2 nights inland and the final night just outside Nice and caught the train into Monaco for the day.

There are a few campsites that do mobile homes and chalets.

This one is right on the beach.

Not sure how much fligts are now. May be cheaper to drive and stay a night on the way down.

Budget? Under £1k for 4 people, including travel, for at least a week, would be lovely!

Sir, I think you need to invest in a caravan!
