I always search for flights using kayak and skyscanner.

I think booking as far in advance as possible saves money.

One of those sites analyses prices based on the time of year/date you are flying and the distance from that date you are booking. Based on historic data they try to estimate if prices are likely to rise or fall if you delay your booking. With a confidence level! I guess 'past performance doesn't guarantee future performance' but they are trying to predict based on the propensity of airlines to milk customers for every penny moving prices around. E.g prices rise closer to flight as you have less choice; the day before an empty fight prices tumble etc.

I just flew United in April on a big split ticket

London to LA
LA to San Diego
San Francisco Boston
Boston Newark
Newark London (they don't fly Boston London)

That cost £930. It's not peak summer season, but all the flights were full....booked vIa kayak with Expedia. Skyscanner don't do multi leg trips)I paid about $600 on the united site to upgrade individual legs to premium economy. So £1300 for premium economy didn't seem too bad to me.

I looked a couple of weeks later and I could have gone cheaper with virgin.... Prices move like the stock market!

United were ok, maybe because I paid a bit extra for premium.. Staff were friendly, entertainment ok, but food wasn't great and booze was extra. Plenty off coffee and water/juice though....

Some bargains to be had if you do a one stop, particularly with people like Norwegian, Icelandic, air lingus.
