Can anyone recommend car hire companies in Malta? Ideally I'd like to hire in Mdina (or have car delivered to hotel). Flying BA business class, so will get a taxi from the airport, shame to miss out!

Many thanks.

Don't bother. It's a tiny place and there are lots of buses and taxis. Also the Maltese seemed to be a little bit insane on the roads when I visited.

I used to have a villa in Mellieha, and found the best way is to hire & drop off the car at the airport, but book it in advance....it saves a lot of messing about, plus you save on TWO taxi fares to and from your hotel.

Just be careful they don't rip you off for the CDW insurance, this sometimes can cost three times the car hire charge.

No point hiring a fancy car on Malta, the Island is only eighteen miles across and you are lucky to get up to 60mph......Just a basic group one or two car is usually good enough.

There are not many car hire companies (if any) in Mdina...(Pronounced IMdina btw)

I'm just back from Malta and my advice would be to avoid Avis!

We were staying in St Julien (The Hilton - lovely hotel) and had decided to hire a car as it was only £79 for the week - I don't mind driving abroad and like to have the freedom to move around without relying on public transport. I picked up the car (a Kia Picanto) at the airport and quickly realised the clutch was knackered and it had a very noisy wheel bearing. After a bit of hassle I managed to change it at the Avis desk at the hotel a few days later for a much newer Picanto. I specifically declined the extra insurance but have now been charged (I will dispute the CC charge) - this seems to be a common practice with Avis Malta according to Trip Advisor. On a more positive note Malta was lovely (as was Mdina) and on balance I was glad we hired a car even though the driving standards are shocking!

Gratuitous picture of a lovely car I saw in Mdina...

Drifters are a very good company - we've used them many a time and they are reliable, friendly and relatively good value.

Took a very similar photo when we were there last May. :-)

We hired through some local company and the standard of car (7 seater) was pretty crap.
Trim missing, dents, A/C broken etc..
managed to get replacement which was ok, just dog slow.

I sorted my own excess insurance but they still charged me :-( managed a refund.

If Avis also do this just be careful whoever you go with.

Any yes driving standards are shocking and watch if it rains, roads become treacherous.

I'm sure Gozo has been recommended for a day trip.
We spent 3 days there as part of a 10 day holiday and its somewhere I will definitely return to. Lovely place.
