We'll be spending a few days there from Friday so I was looking for some ideas of nice little towns and villages to visit within 30 minutes or so please. Also good country walks with decent pubs!

No pubs inside "the gates" at Frinton and pretty crappy ones in nearby area. In fact all the Tendering area is awful for good pubs and restaurants and pretty much everything else too. It's mainly infested with caravaning Chavs on holiday so don't expect too much culture or up market entertainment.

Frintons beaches are the best in the area. Walton Naze beach is interesting and good for fossil hunting under the cliffs, there's a circular walk that takes you round to Walton Backwaters - Arthur Ransome's Secret Waters, and there's organised boat trips to see the seals there at Tichmarsh Marina. Brightlingsea is worth a couple of hours looking at boats on the waterside and there's a really lovely walk along the abandoned railway line beside the river Colne from Arlesford to Wivenhoe. Great Bently village green is the largest in the UK... and err that's all.

Bit further afield are the Essex / Suffolk borders, with loads of pretty villages and Constable country scenery. The drive from Dedham to Manningtree - both worth a stop and wander - and then onto Harwich following the banks of the Stour is always a good one. Couple of interesting museums at Harwich, one IIRC for the early days of Pirate radio. Bit further north into Suffolk there's all the AONB coast which is well worth a day ambling round. Brilliant but expensive waterside pubs - Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill, Waldringfield and more in Woodbridge.

I'd get out and go up the coast to Suffolk or inland along the Essex Suffolk borders. Castle Hedingham, Claire, Dedham, Manningtree, Flatford and Cavendish are outstandingly pretty villages all linked by really lovely driving roads

Thanks for the tips, although having looked on TripAdvisor there seems to be some decent restaurants in Frinton.

It sounds like Suffolk is the direction we'll be heading in for a bit of exploring.

Beaumont quay, went by dinghy many many years ago, built from stone from the old London bridge.
