Who is going skiing and where in 2016
Discussion
Last year there were a lot of squeaky bums, the snow 'usually' comes in time for Christmas week, I believe most didn't get it until a little later last year. You can mitigate against the risk heading somewhere with a glacier/high altitude/good snow making-problem is in lean times holiday makers will be bused in so it can be painfully busy.
Agreed, the Bergwelt was exceptional. We're in the Laurin Alpenhotel this time which is OK but not the Berg, I think we've been spoilt!
Snow is fine up high and they've made an attempt to make a run back into town but it's safer for my board to get the bubble back down. Snowed a bit last night & clear blue today. Should be another good day.

Cool. I'd go back, my Mrs has had a take it or leave it skiing attitude really so I wanted to try and get her interested again by making it more a holiday with some skiing for her and choosing Obergurgl and the Bergwelt really paid off. I thought the food was cracking, like eating out at a high end restaurant every night, and the spa meant when she fancied a day off she was more than happy to spend a day in the spa while I got a guide for the day.I noticed some building last year-top mountian cross point? Assume that's open now and opened up some new terrain? Looking at the webcams that basin above Hochgurgl really holds the snow well.
Not spotted any new areas this week but it's only partially open we are mainly in the bowl you mentioned above Hochgurgl. Amazing conditions for the time of year, but we do miss the Bergwelt. Top class place all round. Almost ski in ski out, here is a mild trek to the lift. Back to Obergurgl in 3 weeks though!

It looked like they were working on a new lift over the very far side of the Hochgurgl area. We get birthday and Christmas cards off the Bergwelt since staying with them! I took a rather dicey route trying to see how close I could get to the Bergwelt you can get pretty close but depends on how much speed you can carry down onto that really flat area, and the speed was dependent on how many other skiers and ski schools you had to avoid also the snow was pretty heavy at that time of year too.Do you live over there or just going again because you can? Have you tried Solden? The town has a rep as a bit of a party town but the ski area is top notch.
Sadly I can't see me skiing at all this season (first time in 20 odd years) as I've buggered my knee playing rugby.
Top mountain cross point will be a new 10 person gondola & motorbike museum, we drove past it today, looks a way off being finished.
I live near Manchester but just fancied trying things out in the low season. To be honest it's a bit dead here this week. The slopes are deserted which Mrs shunt enjoys....

Heading to Tignes on Friday afternoon for a weekend away, not been looking good until I checked last night.
Friday eve, 37cm. Then on Saturday, metre plus throughout the day. At the summit, but should be a decent amount a little further down the mountain. Hoping for plenty powder action on Sunday and Monday.
And now contemplating a few days in the Three Valleys in early March....

Booked Les Bruyeres (Les Menuires) for a few days, week before Christmas - landed lucky there last couple of years. Val Thoren is my fall back option being the next valley , maybe not looking so great this year!
Still It's Cheap, the Chalet food's good & I've a hire car! Proper Hol in Feb / March for whole 3 Valleys!

I'm going this afternoon! First ski trip, visiting a friend who is hoping to get there Friday evening, although if he doesn't make it I'm staying in his appt anyway Friday eve, 37cm. I don't know anybody there so if you fancy a drink or something just PM me to rescue me from being billy-no-mates!
Got a day's coaching booked Friday and then skiing alone (or hopefully with mate). I know it's not ideal for a first trip but been learning at Hemel with an amazing instructor and got the bug!
14 weeks to go
Has anyone tried the Bracknell dry slope? Is it worth a one hour session a few times before we go ?
I used to do dry slopes about 25-30 years ago so cannot recall and then as my parents couldn't afford it never managed real snow skiing until about ten years ago.
I just fancy a local ish bit of fun just wondering if it's going to be really pants (thinking of doing a management meeting for 8-1pm then two hours there /lesson for total beginners then meal + booze).

Bracknell slope is OK for a dry slope. Reasonably long with consistent gradient, and a few bumps/rolls on the way down. Unusual in that as well as the usual drag, there's a chairlift (if running) so I've never found queuing to be a problem. I haven't been for some years though, and if I wanted to brush up in the UK, I'd probably drive a bit further to Hemel indoor snow.Has anyone tried the Bracknell dry slope? Booked to go to Snowbombing in Mayrhofen. Just need to work out how we get there!
Anyone got any tips for driving to Austria? My mates are on about driving overnight instead of flying. I'm thinking ferry late Saturday evening then drive through the night to get there late morning. I recon 12 hours from Calais does that sound about right?Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
