Skied in the rain for the 1st time here in Courchevel 1850 on Monday which wasn't as bad as it sounds. Loads of snow falling at the moment tho, so looking good for the rest of the week and beyond. The new leisure centre / swimming complex down in 1550 is something else. 100 Euro for a 6 day / 18hr pass.. Great stuff!!

Useful stuff
Thanks for posting this - I played the youtube clip to my wife and it does perfectly capture the essence of what it would be like skiing with young children who are just beginning.

My pleasure, I'm glad it felt relevant.

On a contrasting note, I just spoke with someone who'd gone on her first ski trip with a party of more experienced skiers in France. They had concluded that as she could stand up, she'd be fine on some tougher blue runs. The result: one person thoroughly put off skiing.

Off to Zermatt on Saturday, lots of snow forecast for the start of the week - 12" on Sunday.

On the down side I've picked a great time to get a sore throat and sniffle frown

Hi Peeps

I've taken a last minute invite to go skiing in Val d’Isère this coming week. I'm 60, very nearly +1.

I'm self-employed and a broken anything would cause me some serious grief work-wise. I'm not a newbie but it's been 15 years since I strapped on a pair - and yes, alcohol played a part in the OF COURSE I CAN SKI, FFS! - WHO CAN'T?

Go back 15 years and I pretty much skied every year from the age of 16 onwards (starting with leather lace-up boots, skis at 1.95m and you wouldn't believe the bindings - but I'm not 16 anymore).

So, question: Insurance.

I'd like all the necessary cover, obviously, but also (in the please god unlikely situation that something breaks) some cover through the recuperation stage should the worst happen - say £3k per month. Any ideas?

Sorry for the hijack.

I use Tesco and SkiClub (for off-piste). Both have policy levels you can upgrade, though off the top of my head I can't remember exactly what they are.

Anyone heading to the 3 Valleys this weekend is in for a treat. Snow is really good with grat runs all the way down to St Martin De Belleville and Courchevel 1350.

I use annual multi-trip Ski club insurance and just use it for all holidays, not just skiing ones

Works out at under £70 for me and my son (I'm an SCGB member so ther is an associated discount)

I'm off to VT for a week this Sunday but most of the forecasts look crap - I've seen one which says rain every day!

I'd bloody hope you CAN ski down to St Martin at this time of year!! Last time I checked, Villages down to Les Allues was closed though?

Off to Soll next week. Hoping for a better week than the shocker we had over New Years in Serre Chevalier, where we had the choice of 3-4 runs above middle station at Chartmelle.

Fingers crossed!

ste, I'm there in 6 weeks time. With a bit of luck there will be some of the white fluffy stuff - next week and in six weeks time. Selected it as thought the altitude would help. In saying all that, we will have car and the apartment in VT is a cheap AirBNB job. If snow is rubbish, there's always the option of burning over to a resort, perhaps not even in France, which does have snow - and write off the apartment fees.

3Vs is looking good for the next 10 days or so. Had around 60cm this past week and due around 1.3m in the coming 9 days from what I have seen.

I've done a few days this week, day tripping out from Zurich. Flumserberg for the first couple, where the weather was amazing but the snow was pretty poor - lots of ice, and cutting up badly as the sun hit it but still fun.

Engelberg on Wednesday was interesting, heavy snow and strong winds but at least it was quieter as none of the school groups were out there.

Thursday in Davos was absolutely fking fantastic though, beautiful sunshine in the morning, great snow. It was my first time there and the train journey is long and slow but the views and the pistes were well worth it. The weather closed in during the afternoon which made the visibility tricky but still good fun (we did retreat down the mountain at 3pm to escape the wind and snow though)

Got back from Wengen on Sunday. Plenty of snow, great skiing and beautiful weather. My respect for the downhill guys has trebled - did the Lauberhorn a few times and some stretches were still VERY icy. Those racers must have huge gonads.

That is the only thing I miss about CH. I used to ski in Schwarzsee during the 2008/9 season and CH had some of the earliest and best snow for decades. The hill was small but you could ski everywhere.

Three weeks to Les Houches.

I've not been there before, snow looks ok currently and it's a long boys weekend away so any advice is very welcome smile
