I'm back from Australia for a wedding in August, and will have 3-4 spare days. Current plan is to take a little road trip somewhere not TOO far a drive from London (so can probably exclude Scotland, Yorkshire etc a possibility though).

Ideally after old country pubs, some nice walking, quaint little villages, etc.. Anybody have any ideas?

Yorkshire's five hours from London. Just two hours from London is the Cotswolds. With just three to four days I'd consider going there.Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-water. All cutesie. Nice walking too.

If you need a holiday cottage out that way I can recommend Fox Cottage at Stapenhill Farm. Nice place and only sleeps two so a reasonable price. Google will find it.

I live in London and can easily get to Leeds in 3 hours and Glasgow in 6.5..

Anyway, there are very cheap internal flights to Glasgow or Edinburgh if you'd prefer. Would probably be able to get a flight for not much more than hiring a car.

Sticks.

I've a place in Rye, on the Sussex coast, which is very popular for short breaks.

A medieval hill town, there's plenty of places to eat, shop, or visit, all within 5 mins walk. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a great walk, as are Camber Sands and Romney Marsh. http://www.visit1066country.com/explore-1066-count... There's even a jazz and blues festival at the end of Aug if that's your thing.

Ashford is now 38mins on the fast train from St Pancras, and Rye is a further 20 mins approx.

Best hotels (imho) are either The Mermaid, for beams, ghosts and traditional service, similarly Jeake's House, or The George, which combines modern and retro well, but does host a lot of wedding parties.

There are plenty of holday cottages, Mermaid St and Watchbell St being the most 'pretty' streets, but beware many don't have an outside space and rooms can be cramped. Mine's 30 yards from the High St, and doesn't have the beams etc but has a secluded courtyard which is still quiet. http://www.amberleyhousecottages.co.uk/Sussex/Holi...

Cotswolds probably. Lots of decent pubs and stupidly pretty villages. Around Stow on the Wold is nice. (Lived there for 10 years)

Dorset would fit the bill and an easy run from London. No point spending hours driving.

Just to add to the good suggestions so far;

South Downs (Sussex- Arundel is great)
Peak District, Buxton or Bakewell
North Norfolk, Wells or Walsingham

this is a shame because Scotland is easily the best place to visit in the UK.

Do-able on the 21.15 sleeper from Euston - gets to Inverness at 08.38, you can be on Skye before midday by train.

Take a look at The Master Builder, Bucklers Hard.
It's on the coast in the New Forrest and easily accessible within the time frame you have.
Loads of history, a great pub, superb rooms (in the old part of the hotel) and good walks. Close to Beaulieu too, if you fancy it.

If Yorkshire is within reach, so is the Lake District. Leave early and it can be done in less than 4 hours. And it's beautiful. I'm a big fan of Chapel Stile in the Langdale Valley as a base but there are plenty of others.

Another vote for Rye, stay in the Windmill if it's available. Make sure you go to Dungeness beach too!

You could also stay in Petworth's old railway station it fantastic... http://www.old-station.co.uk/tourpullman.htm
