BA's 747s that are used on this route don't have at-seat power in the peasant seats. What strategies do PH's restless travellers have for surviving long haul flights?
When are you thinking of going? The 747's from August will have IFE upgrade which includes USB power in sardine class. It will be pot luck for a while to get an airframe that has had it done.

Personally I do booze and sleeping pills - go see your doctor for some, rather than the over the counter ones which don't work.

BA has some amazing historic aviation documentaries on its AVOD system, ranging from check flights on a VC-10 to the process of getting ready for the overnight stay of a pre-war flying boat in Arabia. I thoroughly recommend working through them!
Never found those - will have to have a look next week, that sounds interesting!

Do everything Slowly..

Break the time into pieces, read, music, food, film, magazine, booze, doze, get up and about...
After many many trips to Asia from LHR it's worked for me.

Did a load of sleeping pills from Auckland to heathrow one time. Superb.

Just about managed to get off the plane to refuel, but it was a close run thing.

I'd do that again in a heartbeat.

I would NEVER take sleeping pills on a long-haul flight. If the plane crashes you're going to sleep right through and probably won't be able to get out.

Probably for the best in that case!

An iPad loaded with films and/or box-sets of TV shows. (West Wing in my case).

11 hours? Thats not so much.

Take a book, watch a couple of movies. Play a phone game or two. eat a meal or two, all done.

Having just completed a trip Southampton – Edinburgh – Amsterdam – Guangzhou – Daqing, here is my 10 cents worth

Noise cancelling headphones (a must)
Fully charged laptop, tablet, phone and USB battery pack.
External hard drive, with a decent TV series or two, like “The Bridge” or “House of Cards” I find this works better than films.
Good book
Some good food, snacks, so you are not dependent on the muck, airlines call food.
Fluids purchased air side.
Hooch in moderation (I like to arrive with a clear head)
Comfortable clothing

Booze as said.
Also, I go to California quite regularly and, as the company wont allow Business class anymore, I fly into Dulles or Philly and then on to San Fran or LA the next day.

iPad and movies or a series - eg I am working my way through Homeland from the start on my monthly 10 hr flight to and from JNB. Time passes quite well and the battery will cope.

I flew to LA a few weeks ago and had the best time, got talking to the person next to me and ended up with a new friend, normally I just plug myself into the films but this time only watch one film and read a bit on my IPad but have never known a flight go so fast, the rest of the time we talked.

OK guess that is a bit random and down to chance but I cant remember the last time I had such an enjoyable flight

Can you just get a Smartstick or something to keep topping the charge up?

I find 30mg of valium (no booze!) and some Bose noise cancelling headphones normally does the trick.

I usually have a little chat and it always makes the first hour or so of the flight fly by. Usually if I am flying to/from the States I can have a good chinwag with an American flyer. Chatty buggers, they are.

Noise Cancelling headphones help also, and don't load up on food pre flight. I always enjoy eating on flights.

Get in Amazon and go by the reviews, the good ones have hundreds, and they come in all different sizes.
