Hi guys, my pregnant wife (18 weeks) isn't keen on going abroad this year and so we are thinking of visiting somewhere in the UK for up to a week. We would probably stay in a four star hotel but nothing too extreme price-wise, ideally there would be lots to do out and about but not too busy or tiring (London's out) and ideally, great weather. Happy to drive from Glasgow or possibly sail/fly. Any ideas?. I was thinking about Cornwall earlier but I'm open to your thoughts.

Thanks in advance. Martin

Ps. I have no idea why there's an angry red face next to this thread!

Yup, the Lakes could be a good call. We stayed in the Windermere Boutique Hotel I think it was a couple of years ago - nice enough but would probably try somewhere else.

She's 18 weeks tomorrow so not huge but still tired and getting bigger every few days it seems. Obviously lying sunbathing isn't an option, she's obviously off alcohol and is watching what she's eating so it would almost be a waste to spend a couple of grand going abroad and she can't do the things we normally would do.

Lake district would be a good call. Or how about somewhere like Bournemouth/Exeter where you can fly down?

An hour or so in a plane has to be more comfortable then 6+ hours in the car

bks, they all use that excuse: "I'm eating for two now". It's a crap and lame excuse for piling on fat whilst pregnant!

According to the midwife we saw recently there's no need to 'eat for two' until about 4 weeks before D-Day.

Edinburgh is nice, the amenities of a big city, and providing you don't go during the fringe and avoid the top of the royal mile isn't terribly touristy and has a reasonable 'small city' feel

I would try my best to convince the wife to change her mind and go abroad for a sun/beach holiday for a week! Don't know if you have other kids already, but if not it could be agreat last chance for a restful time away. 18 weeks isn't too far gone to avoid foreign travel in Europe.

This also has the benefit of saving on costly hotels, you can simply drive to your holiday destination on a daily basis and then return home at the end of the day. The ultimate staycation.

Bournemouth is a good idea, maybe not enough to do for a week unless you combined it with the New Forest. Channel Islands? Then again if you are flying that far it is not much longer to get to mainland Europe.

A bit closer to home, how about rent a cottage/lodge on Arran. Fantastic wee island with lots to see and do. Skye is another option. If the weather is decent, you can't beat the West coast.

Another option is Moness Country club in Aberfeldy. A really nice part of the country. I've stayed there several times

Creiff Hydro is also great, but more suited to families than couples.

I stayed there with work years ago and would love to go back again...

Thanks for all the replies so far guys - I'm off on holiday so will check out the suggestions above. Arran is out as I have bad memories of the place which is a pity as I've always fancied the Auchrannie Resort. Whilst Glasgow has its downsides, I'm not a huge fan of Edinburgh although my wife treated me to an overnight stay at the Witchery last year and it was lovely - not sure it was worth the money overall but that's another story.

I don't know anything about Bournemouth or Exeter so I'll do some research.

With regard to the Moness Resort Terzo, it appears on the likes of Groupon now and again and whilst I've been tempted, I've kind of been put off by some of the pictures and reviews on Trip Advisor (we tend to check these first). What has your experience been like?

Will also check out Durham too!

Keep them coming folks. Cheers!

edit: as for the eat for two argument - she's in the 'just an excuse to eat st and get fat' camp. She's been eating a much more healthy and balanced diet however.

Thanks for the suggestion - looks like a very nice hotel but about £500 for only 5 nights which is room only - just too pricey I think but I'll have a look at other options in Durham too.

I've been living in hotels in london for 2-3 nights a week, so my "cheap hotel" radar is set below £120 a night frown

I'd second the North East option. The coastline around the Berwick / Alnwick area is stunning. Recently rented a cottage right on the beach a Beadnell and had a great relaxing week. Probably a 2 - 3 hour drive from Glasgow too.

I've not read any of the trip advisor stuff from Moness. Gonna check now ha.

The inlaws had a time share there so i've been a few times and it's always been very good. The accomodation is basic but nice enough, the surroundings are lovely, and your only a five minute walk from the Birks of Aberfeldy.

The resort has a decent sized pool, with Spa/Sauna and Steam room, and there's a private dining area, although i've never used it.

It's a great base for exploring around Perthshire which for us was the main thing and your only a 10 minute drive away from Loch Tay and all the touristy stuff there.

The only gripe i've ever had there was that i ordered a beef burger from the bar, and they gave me a ham burger. 1st world problems and all that.

Another place which i would recommend is the self catering lodges at Duchally near Auchterarder. The lodges there are fantastic, easily a level up from from the ones at Moness, however i prefer the location of Moness.

Edited to add, with both you can stay in the "Hotel" as apposed to the lodges.
