London's clearly going to be up there on any jihadist's list.

But it's a city offering a wealth of culture, tourist sights and attractions which cannot be found elsewhere in the world, i.e. unique experiences which can be used to justify an increased risk over e.g. rural England

Sharm has none of the above, that's the difference. Nothing particularly great, and certainly nothing unique to justify the increased risk.

I also have somewhat more faith in our country's security services.

I would not travel in or to any Muslim country. I simply cannot get my head around the politics /lunacy. There are so many other options.
Shame for the loss of life and those stuck there.but I would never have travelled there in the first place.

You've obviously never dived there...

Not sure I'd call London a Sun Holiday destination!

anyway - it's hot when London's cold; it's cleaner than London; there's less wall to wall humanity scrambling for breathing space; there's less day to day violence/crime, there's less scumbags, all the hotels are of a generally high standard, there's the sea to swim, snorkel and dive in....and it does have the best marine parks/reefs for scuba diving within easy reach of the UK.

But you're right - nothing unique. It's just that if you want all the above on a holiday and don't want to go to Egypt you'll have to go a lot further and pay a lot more to find somewhere safer for a holiday.

Um you do know it's 5hours 20mins to Sharm from Gatwick so Any other uk airport will be longer. None the less that's the exact same time as Cape Verde

My point was that +5hrs is not short. Crammed in a charter flight or economy for that length of time certainly doesn't feel short!!

Agreed.

Don't understand though thought you meant Sharn was great as its short ish and offers diving, whereas there are other places same time offering the same you then say it's a long way... Confused dot com

A Thomson holidays flight had a rocket fired at it in August and it only narrowly missed. I really don't understand the attitude of "ah well I could get run over by a bus tomorrow" in the context of this stuff.

Anyway it's all immaterial as the tourist industry will obviously stop in its tracks and isis will move in to fill the void.

No wonder you are confused! I am now! The Red Sea IS the closest for good warm water diving, but it's still not close!

I've never been to Sharm, I used to use Hurghada/El Gouna (I'll exclude Yanbu from this discussion as you don't get many tourists there!) for diving in the Red Sea. Not been for a few years now, but to be honest got put off by the number of Russians.

If people want to go there fine but it's odd that when pushed those individuals don't seem prepared to say pay for a different holiday for their kids I& wife if they don't want to go. I wonder if they will stump up for the UK child care or instead drag them along kicking and screaming.

Course they'll drag them there. Meh my kids could get run over by a bus tomorrow, so I'll willingly put them in danger because I have no concept of balancing risk and I can't cope if a holiday isn't all inclusive because I don't really like my kids very much in the first place so they'll leave me alone to get pissed and burnt.

rofl tt. I didn't justify your random hypothetical scenario with a reply before but seeing as you want to have a dig I'll bite.

My kids are old enough to pay for their own holidays now, they've done the big Disney and New York stuff and idyllic villas when they were younger, if they want to go away they can work for it and do their own thing...

My missus is the one who booked Sharm, do you have an actual point?

Well quite, but that's why it's attractive to the hordes. Not sure why WB doesn't get that!

What ever you do or did think of sham the fact is 80 tourists were killed in a bomb at one of the tourist hotels in Sham. Then we have a missile come within 1,000 foot of a passenger aircraft in Aug this year then you have the blowing up of a tourist plane returning from Sham.

Not great.

Then we have the issues it hat the country is going through huge turmoil/civil unrest - not great location to be in during such events.

Then we have say Tunisia over the years tourists have been gunned down st museums on the beach or round the pool.

You go to these places sadly we are the targets of these terrorists - you might/very likely to be totally safe but just imagine you were in Tunisia this summer wife and kids down on the beach and you'd forgotten the snorkels of blow up ball /whatever so trundle back to the room and then that terrorist stack happened. And let's assume through chance they were thankfully unhurt - but no doubt would be terrified /traumatised I'm highly confident you'd never go near the place ever again even if it was the most wonderful place in the world.
