It was reported recently that in the past the Greek government has failed to collect 90% of the tax revenues due to it, and that 30% of all income tax payers never remit their tax due anyway.

The posturing by the Greek government is purely political. They know that the real issues are internal and that pointing the finger at the so call troika is not even close to the real problem.

Heaven knows what will happen in a few days when the money has run out. Watch out for Mr. Putin to make an entrance I think.

i think you are confusing reports, it is reported the debt is 90% of total yearly tax revenue that has been accured.

‘At the end of 2014, Greeks owed their government about €76 billion ($86 billion) in unpaid taxes accrued over decades, though mostly since 2009. The government says most of that has been lost to insolvency and only €9 billion can be recovered'

From The Sunday Times today:

Greece
Tour operators are cutting the price of packages by up to 70% in an effort to unload thousands of unsold holidays.

Thomson is leading the cut-price charge. Last week, it slashed the price of a fortnight in Mykonos in late July from £928 to £369, including flights and accommodation. A week in Kos was reduced by 70% and now costs £182.

Manos cut 70% off a week’s B&B in Kalamata, with the price falling from £642 to £193. Ionian & Aegean Island Holidays has dropped prices for dozens of properties by half. Sunvil and Fleetway Travel have also discounted to stimulate demand. “These are prices you would never normally see during the peak season,” said Julia Lo Bue-Said, of Advantage Travel Centres.

According to the Greek Tourism Federation, late bookings have dropped by 40%. The crash in demand follows fears of shortages and disruption on the islands. Some specialist tour operators have said they will act as a “bank of last resort” for clients who run out of cash. Ionian & Aegean Island Holidays, Olympic and Sunvil have all made arrangements for reps to advance euros to clients against their credit cards.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised travellers to take sufficient euros in cash for their whole holiday, so travel insurers have increased their limits for personal money cover. The Post Office has doubled the amount of cash insured from £250 to £500 for a basic policy. Holiday Extras, Thomas Cook and Sunvil have also increased cover.

As someone has previously said I imagine there will be a rise I street crime as people become desperate.

Years ago when I was in my late teens there was a Cypriot lad in my circle of friends; his dad was really high up in the government and he and his sister had a 4bed apartment that overlooked Marble Arch. They always had their 'service man' get their meals and shopping . They even had personal drivers. He was a great chap and incredibly generous to all his friends. I think deep down we all knew that there was something very wrong with the situation and the huge wads of money he had available for his age - he would spend more on treating us all going out for one evening than I earned in a month! It is now 2decades later and now I have a better understanding as to why!

He used to tell us about how his uncles won all the big government construction jobs because his dad would 'vouch' for them. Was I jealous? Hell yes lol but like I said he was a great chap who lived a fantastic life style partying 6days a week.

Got home yesterday having spent 4 weeks in the Ionian islands.

Biggest problem was cash - you need lots of it as credit cards are no longer being accepted in most places. After a while the search for cash becomes a hobby. There'll be a rumour in a bar that a particular ATM is working and people will immediately leave to try their luck. Not too bad for foreign tourists - you can get as much as you like if you can find an ATM that's working. The Greeks have it much tougher - having found a machine with money they can only withdraw €60 per day.

On the whole however I was impressed with the attitude of the Greeks. Streets were cleaned, bins were emptied, there was no civil disobedience whatsoever. I saw no evidence of shortages of food, fuel or other essentials. As a tourist destination it is still functioning 100%.

As long as you have cash, of course.

Ryanair were trying to do free flights, but as it stands I could get £65 each return to Athens and a 5 star hotel with a pool on the roof for £40 per night...
