Rather depends when you are going, i.e. time of day.

It can be a lovely 50mph drive, cruising and chilling, enjoying the sun.
It can be a balls out 6am dash.
It can be a 30mph drudge during which you promise to sell your first born just so the hell would end.

So what time should I leave Grenoble to arrive in Monaco at a sensible hour and get mostly nice driving?
Mid week on the 22nd July.

Rush hour around Grenoble is 7 - 9am. You are going nowhere fast at that time. Its highly industrial all round the place.

Sounds like a lazy breakfast is in order before heading South.
