Well it's been a while in coming, but tromso was the place and has been truly fantastic first night out and the northern light did not disappoint us fantastic show, with all the other things we have done in less than 48 hours, top result can't recommend it enough ??
Lucky timing for being there! I am in Japan on holiday now, but normally am living just a little south. Glad you got to see them properly!randlemarcus said:
Loads of purple as well, turned out to be a good show. Apparently. All grey to me, like wispy smoke. There was a smear of green on some of the stronger ones. Just doing expectation management, as it absolutely doesn't look like that. Tromso was lovely though.
Looking at that picture it doesn't look like that good a display, at least for me. Probably it was taken around 10-15 second exposure or so? When you get a display that requires 3 seconds and sometimes less at ISO 800 then you know it's good! It also is very hard to get pictures of them, since when it's that good it moves so quickly. But those types of displays are not so common, and unless you live here in the north then you're going to be very lucky to spot one.fishboy said:

Lads, I am going to be in Swedish Lapland the 1st week of March for a day or so.. Really hoping I can catch a glimpse of the lights.
Do I stand a good chance seeing them in that area around that time? (provided obviously no cloud etc)
Not particularly - with just a day it will be completely down to luck if you see them. Often you get 2 or 3 days of greater activity and then a break before the next time they come. Worth looking anyway, but it doesn't give you a big chance when you have such a short time there.Do I stand a good chance seeing them in that area around that time? (provided obviously no cloud etc)
