The last time I went to New York I bought an AT&T pay as you go sim and paid about $30 and got about 500gb of data but that was a few years ago and it's all different now.

I don't have a personal mobile plan anymore as work give me a sim to use but I think if I go to America and hammer the data I'm going to have a bit of an issue!

I'm there for a week and I'll probably use no more than 1.5gb. I have my own iPhone 6 that I bought direct from Apple so it's unlocked. I'm not really bothered by making calls or sending texts.

Options I've found are AT&T $60 pay as you go sim. 4GB of 4G but by the time I've bought a sim card I'm looking at the best part of £50. Alternatively Three have Feel at home so I could just get a pay as you go sim and use this but it doesn't guarantee a speed, I don't really want to be stuck on GPRS. Their website isn't very clear on how much credit I will need to use this either.

Has anyone been out the USA recently and can offer any advice?

T-Mobile simple plans - $40/month for unlimited everything. First 1GB is 4G, then after that it is reduced to 3G speed, or pay $50 and get the first 3GB at 4GB speed.

You could try getting a tablet data only plan (see tab from that link) and putting than in the phone....

Good call on T Mobile, they do a $3 monthly pay as you go with $10 weekly charge for 1gb of 4g.

There is also a T-mobile plan available only from Walmart which is $30 for 100 mins and 5GB of data and unlimited texts to everywhere including overseas.

Note that incoming calls count against your minutes in the US, not just outgoing calls.

I'm just back from Florida and have been using Three through their "feel at home" on 2 xiPad and 2 x iPhone (inc. the OH); I've normally been a big advocate of this and it's worked great for me in the past, especially in the EU, but I had a nightmare with it this time. I travelled across FL but whenever I was on Tmobile I wouldn't get any 3G (no 3g icon although full bars); it would occasionally work with a reboot and this happened across all four devices so it wasn't an isolated issue. When I did get 3G the speeds were incredibly slow.

I'm off to New York on Wednesday and will let you know how it works there. In terms of allowances, if you buy a PAYG sim and load it with data , thats what you are able to use abroad.

Three works fine in New York, I was there in April.
I've used mine in New York, New Orleans , San Diego and San Fran this year and had no problems at all with it.

I used three in 20 states including NY and NYC over the last few months and no problems, most use was Google maps sat nav and hotel bookings. Only thing i do is manually select my network provider as AT&T rather than T-Mobile as like others have fount T-Mobile isn't always the fastest. Top speed though was HSDPA+ but rarely dropped below HSDPA.

If you want 25GB of data then you need the £15 package which is unlimited data at home but capped at 25gb on feel at home.

only problem i did have was my weather widget was badly coded such that its data requests looked like tethering and swiftly blocked my data. Once the app was identified as the problem and removed then replaced with an alternate i had no further issues

Thanks everyone, sounds like three is the winner. I'll call in a store and get a sim.

In the NYC area Verizon have the best coverage followed by AT&T. T-mobile is crap. I say this having currently got 2 phones. One on Verizon and one on AT&T. I had a T-Mobile phone for 2 years. They were the dark ages for me

Fantastic, my girlfriend wants to speak to someone in a shop just to make sure we can use it (I'm sure we can) but I'll wait until she's done that until I put an order in.

A bit of an update now I have returned. I ended up buying the £15 Three sim from a store and it worked straight off in my phone.

It's great coming home knowing that I won't have a large bill coming my way and calling and texts to home worked flawlessly. I spoke to my dad from the 100th floor of the world trade centre as clear as anything.

Data could be a bit patchy though, I never got a 4g signal whist I was there and sometimes I couldn't get a 3g signal or it would say I had and then refuse to load the pages. Overall I would recommend getting one from a price point of view but if you are looking for high speed mobile data it's probably better to go for a local sim.

Did you use the google maps app there by any chance? Did it work?

Great, its a shame they have dumped the £15 plan now though, but i guess it could have been worse as they have at least brought in a £20 one (the same as the old £15 but £5 more) rather than leave us having to go to the £25 plan.

Doubt you would get 4G out there, especially when roaming, but when i was looking into it phones seemed to be either North America or the rest of the world variants, with the differences being the 4G bands they support and with not much overlap!

As per previous post I was in New York last month and used my 3 sim; having experienced lots of problems on the US tmobile network on my last visit to Florida, I turned off automatic in the carrier settings and chose AT@T which was perfect.

It's funny you mention google maps as I had real problems with it working (it was incredibly slow, as if I was not connected) ; I had to revert to Apple maps which was fine.

I too struggled with google maps but the apple ones were fine.

My phone would alternate between T-Mobile and AT&T.
