Hi all,

Thinking of an overland trip to and from the following two places....We did the trip several years ago via Dover, Reihms etc, and very enjoyable it was too, but a LONG way round...Took 3 days with stops.

However, this time I am thinking of going from Hull, via Zebbrugge, a couple of hours to Hull and then around six hours on the other side...(according to the net).....

So:- Has anyone done this trip, is the time realistic, and have you any tips?....not looking to break any speed records.......

Also any idea of Ferry prices approx, car is a Zafira tourer.

(The purpose of the trip is a visit to Herrenberg, a charming little town just outside Stuttgart, where my son used to live when he worked for Hewlett Packard).

We did this last year via Rotterdam and printed off a GoogleMaps route which went across Venlo, Breda Nijmegen then down the Western side of Germany to Karlsruhe and across to Stuttgart. Worked fine.
Came back via Heilbronn and up past Cologne and time was about the same. Thing to note is freight traffic can be heavy to and from major ferry ports and although 6 hours is about right you have to add stops; more like 8.
Saves trailing down to Calais from NW and to Stuttgart it saves a stopover.
Being in your area we like the crossing from Hull but it's likely to be about £4-500-ish for car and 2 including meals etc - easy to get a quote on www.poferries.com. We went to Zeebrugge in June this year and it cost about £400 inc meals and outside cabin but that was coming straight back the next day.
The Brasserie restaurants on these ships are good but you can pay in advance but not get a time and we've found a couple of times that a lot of people board very early and get the early slots.
Getting away from Rott or Zee is quick but you always have to queue through Hull in the morning.

I live in Ludwigsburg, which is about half an hours drive from Herrenberg (never been there). Don't know if it helps but when I visit my folks back in Sunderland and want to take the car I use DFDS from Amsterdam to Newcastle. Without going crazy it is pretty much exactly six hours from my house in Ludwigsburg to the ferry terminal in Amsterdam.

If I visit my brother in Preston I fly to Manchester from Stuttgart direct. Ryanair cover the route and are cheap. I suspect that for less than the cost of your fuel and ferry ticket you could fly and rent a car.

Thanks to both of you, appreciated.....thumbup

I think, thinking about it, the plane would be the better/cheaper option, we have actually flown before, and hired a nice car at Stuttgart airport, visiting Heidelberg and Neuschwanstein castle on day trips whilst there. (The castle was magnificent covered in snow)

RWM.....Check out, if you get the chance, Herrenberg, it is a charming little town...smile

I travelled from Lichfield to Stuttgart last year by rail, was quite a pleasant journey. It's largely the same trains from Manchester - 0835 from Manchester, arrive Stuttgart 1923. Change in London (walk 10 mins Euston to St Pancras, change in Paris (walk 10 mins Gard du Nord to Gare de Paris-Est, you get about an hour in Paris so time for a quick lunch), then double decker TGV to Stuttgart.
