Good morning,

I am looking at taking the girlfriend away to see the northern lights as part of her birthday present and wondering at what point in the year is the most likely time to see the northern lights. The internet is full of sales stories therefore was trying to find an unbiased opinion on which month has been the most successful in spotting them. I understand there is no guarantee

Appreciate any comments in advance

Cheers

It would cost a fair bit but is well worth it.Go before the Russians have fully invaded.

We spent many times visiting Iceland at various times of the year and never once saw the Northern lights.... Headed to Tromso, Norway last week, and voila. An amazing spectacle

We saw them just north of Reykjavik last year. We decided not to do a tour, as if you can't guarantee that THAT night will be a good display. Instead, we hired a car, downloaded an iPhone app, srove out into the Bundu and saw the most incredible displays for 3 nights running.

The Mrs and I are trying to book a trip over new year to hopefully experience the northern lights and see some snow (we live in the desert so it will make a nice change smile ). Any suggestions of nice places to stay, preferably a log cabin or something that's not a normal hotel?

We only really want to go via one direct flight from London, which is limiting the options a bit. Tromso in Norway and Iceland seem to be the easiest places to get to, although the flights to the former seem a little random.

Any suggestions? Cheers
