Florence itself is a lovely place. My first time driving LHD was there! We joined a driving tour in 1960s Fiat 500s and Vespas, with "The Italian Wheels" company.

Driving such a tiny car let us head into the Tuscan wine region, along ancient narrow roads. Just beautiful!

Walking tours of the city are good too, and it's hard to find a bad restaurant.

At the motorway services, if you queue like a Brit you'll be waiting forever. Use your elbows and yell! ;-)

I agree that Rome is too big for a day trip. We spent 5 nights there and I still want to go back to see more. Loved it. Also, don't drive there. It's mental.

Haven't been to Pisa myself, but everyone tells me it's hardly worth a photo stop.

Ignore all the crap about it being impossible to drive in Italian towns. It's just like rush hour in manchester/birmingham/anywhere only you don't know the way.
Verona is a lovely city, the Arena there is far more complete than the one in Rome, and they have shows in there, so worth checking for the day you go.

Driving in Italy is fine.

Lots of places around the florence area to explore. Sienna to the south, pisa to the west, the spa towns or even modena to the north etc etc. One little village just outside Florence is De Vinci - barely anyone goes but it has a great little museum dedicated to its famous sons many inventions. Great to wander around.

Have fun. Italy is great and highly complex below its surface.
