Went there a long time ago when the wife and I used to live in Jo'Burg. We had our own car, was an easy enough drive, well signposted, but you can hire Sat Nav's now. Took about 2 hours, mainly boring, but there were a couple of points which were worth stopping and looking at.

Sun City itself is great. Currency is on your side at the moment, food is good quality and cheap, As you're aware, it's just coming into summer, so the weather is great. It's a typical, all - inclusive resort with hotels, casino's, and if you're lucky,a concert with a decent artist. Food will range from high end to basic burgers, but as said, currency means it'll all be relatively cheap at the moment

Just outside sun city, you can go on a safari, We did Pilansberg National Park. Full Big 5 park and it's self drive if you want, so we drove around and just chanced upon the animals. There's a central cafe where you can get refreshments, and a big board which people put pins in to say what they've seen and where, so if you've not seen a particular animal, you can increase your chances based on an earlier viewing.

If you're planning on spending any time in and around Jo'Burg itself, I recommend a visit to the Lion Park. They rear these particular lions in captivity which means they're used to human contact. You can pick up and play with cubs, and then drive through the park and watch lions in a largely natural habitat and if you're lucky, watch them devour springbok carcass at feeding time.

Am jealous. Enjoy

My wife is a bit concerned that it is not safe, from the humans not the animals and is adamant that she will not go outside the complex. Is this so? Have heard so many stories but they were going back some years about people being hijacked/robbed.

Avoid the townships unless you're on a guided tour with a proper guide. Whilst I was working, wife went on a township tour of Soweto. The only place in the world where two nobel peace laureates lived on the same street. Nelson Mandela and Archibishop Desmond Tutu. Again. Organised tour, very safe.

Standard city rules apply, if a local tells you to not go somewhere, or not be in a place after dark, then don't. Apart from that, just be street aware. Also, if you're driving, then things like, don't leave handbags or valuables on display whilst driving. Leave a gap from the car in front of you. At night, roll through the stop signs and treat red lights (they call them robots) as stop signs. roll through then accelerate if safe.

It's not the safest place in the world, but if you exercise caution, then it's magical.
