Hello all,

The Mrs and I fancy a holiday either just after Christmas or at the start of the new year. Flight length we'd go further for better weather but nothing over 10 hours say (I'd really have liked to go to South Africa).

For reasons I won't go in to we want to go somewhere that has decent medical care in case of an unlikely emergency.

I've been before and wouldn't knock anyone who wants to go or has been recently but wouldn't consider Egypt, Tunisia etc at the moment.

We've had connecting flights into Dubai but never stated over

Caribbean? Probably within the flight time been to quite a few places and would go back.

Canaries? Seems warm rather than hot but would probably be fine?

Main land Spain not warm enough.

I usually save my holidays and £ at this time of year for skiing but due to an injury won't be able to so I'm not really up on the better places to go etc at this time of year.

ideal weather conditions in the caribbean and the flights are within the parameters (unless you want a non "hub" island). dry season and the trade winds will be blowing keeping things very pleasant indeed

health care is actually pretty good, even in our little backwater, but if it's a major consideration then stick with the larger islands where the infrastructure is well established - St Lucia, Barbados etc

never been myself but i've always wondered about the florida keys - would think they might fit the bill. all the advantages of the US (which sounds oxymoronic but i'm referencing your healthcare stipulation) but none of the drawbacks?

Thanks for the reply. We've done quite a lot of the US over the years and normally wouldn't rule it out but have an outstanding speeding ticket (long story) it's £400 odd quid so would have to factor in paying that, my arse would be nipping going through immigration otherwise!

South Africa has excellent health care, particularly if insurance is paying. Last time I did LHR-JNB it was 10hrs 20 mins - cape town is marginally longer but still normally under 11hrs.
Well worth the effort and that time of year is the peak of the summer.

Minimal time difference too, which will help with jet lag if you tend to suffer from that.

I really liked the Florida Keys. Been a few times over the years. Complete contrast to Miami or Orlando. Very relaxing smile

However. we went to Florida in December/Jan a couple of years ago and the weather was far from pleasant. It was down to 4C at one point. It was fairly freak weather, but I certainly wouldn't go back that time of year again.

You should have paid the speeding ticket wink

If your criteria is 10 hours, then you cannot exclude SA. As above, negligible time difference and it's summer down there! A few minutes longer on the flight than your 'limit' makes it worthwhile.

We're up north so would need a connecting flight for Heathrow or get a connection elsewhere which adds a few more hours on IME flights to Cape Town aren't cheap, but as I said I'd love to go again.

On the speeding ticket in the US, it was 5 years ago I was stopped given a ticket and told the fine would come through to my UK address, I waited and nothing came so I wondered if the cop just made a show of it (I was 5 mph over). 2 years later I get a letter through asking for ~$700.

Thailand mainland hospitals are very good. Only another 60 minutes to BKK past your 10-hour deadline!

I'd go back to Thailand in a heartbeat but again issues with direct flights from our cloest airport plus getting from Bangkok to a beach so I reckon we'd well exceed the 10 hours.

So far I am finding:

Barbados and St Lucia are expensive compared to the Mexican Caribbean coast and places like the Dominican Republic and Cuba. We just want to chill out for a week up to 2 weeks so don't particularly care as long as the sun is warm, with a good hotel and food.

Looked at Cape Town but with no direct flights available to us we'd be looking at in excess of 14 hours so no good.

I've really never fancied Dubai, I've flew through many times but it meets my brief, similar temp to the Caribbean but more sunlight allegedly. Given the sheer quantity of Emirates flights there are plenty of direct flights and they're not expensive.

Dubai/Doha/Bahrain are about 6 hours away; Christmas/New Year you're looking at early-mid 20 degrees Celsius and the sky is mostly cloudless. The sun goes down relatively early but just factor that into your day if you want to spend it on the beach etc.

If you're happy with staying in a (good) hotel resort, and not doing much else, you'll be well looked after with the service and choice of restaurants. Not the most interesting of holidays (in my opinion - even though I go getmecoat) but a safe option if you want some sun and relaxation.

The Canaries aren't too bad but can be unpredictable. I go at the rnd of February and get high 20s, low 30s.

Slightly further but Kerala in Southern India is great in January (antibiotics over the counter too) and Goa is slightly nearer, Sri Lanka slightly further. we used to fly with Monarch to Trivandrum - not great but did the job.

I'm back on to the Caribbean now probably the Caribbean Cost of Mexico. I'm sure the health care is more than adequate in most tourist destinations but finding it hard to convince the Mrs......

i think i'd prefer cape town. less humidity for one. also far cheaper once you get there for a much higher quality of food/drink. the savings meaning you can rock up to the winery in one of these:

If your 10 hour limit is for medical reasons then so be it but if not I'd such up the extra hours and do Thailand.

Similary to Cape Town just can't get there quick enough as we have to get a regional flight in order to get a direct flight from Heathrow. By time you're doing a connection etc it's realistically the best part of a day IME travelling.
