Hi all,

Honeymoon upcoming in mid Feb, not sure where to go. We'd like some beach relaxation but the OH and I would get bored of that quickly so we'd need somewhere with other stuff to do as well.

Pencilled in short list:
- Caribbean (Cuba?)
- Somewhere in Asia (Malaysia?)
- South America (Peru for the Inca Trail?)

The other idea was a US road trip across Route 66. Obviously that would be quite different from the above but I suspect no less enjoyable.

We have up to 3 weeks in total.

Would appreciate your suggestions. TIA smile

1. Sri Lanka / Maldives. Half/Half.

2. USA. We did 2 weeks driving the default California/Vegas thing last year and it was incredible.

Multi centre trip to Cuba. Havana and Trinidad for culture and activities (Vinales etc) then Guadalavaca (Paradisus Rio de Oro) for all inclusive luxury.

South Africa, drive the garden route.

Vietnam - Cambodia, lots of different routes here.

If either are of interest I can provide more details of what we did!

We did Antigua for our Honeymoon..We did enjoy it, but not as much as we thought we would.

In hindsight, we wish we had done Disney Florida instead. lots to do, great atmosphere and also lots of time to relax if need be.

but that as just us, plus i go out my mind just sitting on a Sunbed, burning.

I have family in Trinidad and as much as i love it there its a pretty dangerous place these days, some safer islands in the Caribbean but i suspect you would be bored (although there is something very appealing about Cuba)s

Would much rather go SE Asia so much more to see and do, loved Thailand and 3 weeks allows you to do the so called 'pancake trail' of Bangkok, the north and a southern island. Malaysia is generally considered abit more boring than Thailand and more expensive but the quieter nightlife may appeal and the long distance coaches are much better than those in Thailand. KL, Penang, Langkawi and maybe even Koh Lipe might appeal in your 3 weeks

I loved the Angkor temples in Cambodia if you want something slightly different, Air Asia are very cheap and reliable

Have you considered Hawaii? You can incorporate a stop-off in each direction - good stop-off locations include Las Vegas, San Francisco, L.A., Vancouver and Chicago.

Southern hemisphere climate is perfect in Feb. Money permitting you could combine NZ with e.g. Cook Islands (Aitutaki IS paradise!) or Fiji...or Hawaii, for that matter...

SE Asia should be good/dry-season also - Cambodia was awesome when we went, but possibly a little hardcore for a honeymoon (not sure I'd want to do 5* luxury there when you see how poor everyone else is).

Caribbean - not sure on climate but as long as it's not hurricane-season. Too many choices for all budgets...and if you're into snorkelling/diving you probably won't get bored. Maybe the mainland - Belize/Mexico if you want some sightseeing...

We did Borneo for ours - loads of stuff to do so you won't get bored, plus beach resorts for chilling out.

Snap - 1 week Bali, 1 week Borneo. Stayed at the Tanjung Aru 9 years ago - very nice hotel, small but adequate beach, as a town KK was nothing to write home about. But the islands off the coast were nice for a visit, and as you say there's a fair amount to do.

We did SA and the Mauritius for a week (we went in May/June so southern hemisphere winter) for our honeymoon. Loved South Africa Mauritius just didn't like for various reasons.

South Africa is great, really good value at the moment at over 20 rand to the £. I like to have stuff to do to. Roads are good, garden route is popular, Cape Town, Camps Bay, wine lands, safari on the Cape or head north to Kruger national park. The East coast (Durban etc) is on the Indian ocean and has some nice beaches.

Thailand is easy to get a bit of variety, it's less so a place I'd be inclined to drive. Bangkok, Chang Mai in the north then a beach stay is a popular combo. Loved it there, verhy good value and superb food.

Maldives/Sri Lanka

Maldives/Dubai

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will feedback to the other half. smile

At the moment it's between Cuba and Fiji. Seems like a great blend of beach, culture and things to do. Fiji is ruddy far though! With what's happened with the change in US attitude, I suspect visiting Cuba sooner rather than later is sensible for fear of it changing beyond recognition in the next 10-20 years.

OH has relatives in SA so we can always save that (+/- combined with Mauritius) for a later date.

US Road trip appeals but another couple we know are doing this now so I suspect we'd prefer to postpone for the time being.

Road trip New Zealand South Island followed by 4 or 5 days R&R in Fiji or similar.

Did a similar thing for my honeymoon many years ago with a RTW flight ticket.
2 or 3 days in Langkawi, 11 days NZ, 4 days Cook Islands

Ive been to Fiji and Cuba. Unfortunately we were in Fiji for a wedding so didnt see much, we need to go back again. People were really friendly and it was cracking place to visit. We were on a small island off the mainland. As for Cuba, I go back tomorrow, loved it! We stayed in Havanna for 4 days and then went to a resort. While at the resirt we travelled to all the touristy bits. Get there before a Maccy Ds is built!!!

Cuba is stunning but there isn't as much to do as you might think. It is still fundamentally a beach holiday so somewhere like the Maldives is just better.
Have you considered Kenya/Tanzania? A beach/safari holiday is a perfect mixture imo. I absolutely loved them.
Peru is an excellent trip but not that great for honeymoons, I wouldn't have thought, as it can be quite arduous and uncomfortable if you are travelling around.

We went to Kenya for ours 25 years ago.

Not sure how safe it us these days, but it was great then.

Had a week on the beach second week but got bored after a few days and went to another local game reserve.

Excellent trip for those who get bored with beaches.

Thought about NZ? I've never been but seems potential for lots to do if you like the outdoors.

Were not into beaches so we went on a Jeep safari, trip on a sailing boat, trip out to sugar plantation, visited a cigar factory and rum factory and a sightseeing tour with some snorkelling thrown in. I wanted to see a lot more. I spoke to one of the guides and there are a few companies that'll take you on personal tours of the island. We would give this a bash next time.
