Santa Monica is great as is Malibu and other bits of LA but mainly Santa Monica. If buildings are your thing lots of FLW to look at. Get the best daft Yank car you can and just cruise about. SF is good but touristy. San Diego is lovely. Bits in between are good too as mentioned by others.
Easy drive out to the Grand Canyon. Pictures do not give you any sense of the awe you will feel (go in a plane over it if you can). Hoover Dam too. Nice 'Deco architecture and lovely materials inside.

I was just about to say that San Diego is nice.

LA is a bit of a daft place to have built a city really....

We went to California a month ago for a holiday...
Fly to Vegas
Drive to Death Valley (sunrise at Zabriskie Point, very recommended; then it was cloudy which was amazing because it's a beautiful place but wasn't insanely hot)
Bakersfield is an utter dump
Sequioa National Park was awesome if full of tourists
Pacific Coast Highway 1 was a lot of fun, decent visibility on the roads and Americans all scared of going over 20mph. The fastest car in the world is rented, so they didn't hold us up much. Incredible views on pretty much every corner.
Monterrey was beautiful; if we'd known how great that area was we'd have spent more than a day and a half there.
Napa and Sonoma are lots of fun, do wine tasting near where you're staying because it means you can walk around and not have to get fleeced for transport. Bounty Hunter BBQ in Napa was tasty!
SF is good, a few mental cases and homeless but still a great city. Drive down Lombard Street then try and abandon the car because it's not a fun city to drive in. Public transport good. Point Bonita on the North side of the Golden Gate is worth a little visit for views of the Pacific, GG Bridge and the city.

Just... A lot of fun. smile

ETA: Alcatraz - do the night tour, not the day ones. And we took nearly three weeks over this; America is not small unless you want to do nothing but drive.
