Air Canada plane held together with bits or wire !!

First time for about 10 years I've flown with Air Canada - made a return trip to Geneva - San Francisco. The plane was archaic - paint peeling on the engines, various pieces attached with bits of wire were just two of the interesting features. Seemed positively third world. Is this really the national carrier of Canada - anyone else had this experience?

Flew Heathrow - Toronto with them earlier this year and it wasn't like that at all although I wouldn't say that the plane was at the same level as BA.
