Go to Harry's Bar for Peach Belinis. Expensive but one of those MUST DO things in Venice.

Have a meal in the restaurant at the top of Danielis. It's lovely - great food and great view!!!

You can't go too wrong in Venice but don't do a Gondola !

We did the Venice kayak tour.
It was fantastic.
I think you will be a bit late in the season, it's a kind of marmite thing anyway.

Get a small scale map and get to places down the back streets rather than the main tourist routes, you see much more of the real city.

Avoid eating in any restaurants in St. Mark's Square. They're a tad pricey! Plenty of decent ones tucked away.
Avoid sitting down outside any bar in St Mark's Square - We went in the Summer and there was a fairly substantial 'cover charge' for the musicians on top of drinks.

That said, it was worth it to sit in St Mark's Square for an hour with a drink and watch the crowds drift away...

The musicians might not be there in the Winter...

Got one, and I plan on taking the missus up loads of tight alleys while we're there. thumbup

Seek out the church of St. Pantelon, a bit off the beaten track. Once inside you'll realise why I recommend a visit there.

Venice is a wonderful place to simply wander around and explore. Get a detailed map showing all the small streets. It pays to go off the beaten track. But bear in mind steet lighting is limited so it can seem very dark in places. Best eateries are generally hidden away from the tourist areas.

Murano is the island with most of the glass blowing studios. One of the streets is almost lined with shops selling glass. Easy to get carried away (I managed to spend too many euros on a glass vase!)

St Mark's is pricey, but not every bar has the musician charge.

Go to Doges palace, st marks tour and book the "secrets tour", not too expensive, very very worth doing.

As others have said, avoid the flash restaurants unless budget is no issue. Plenty of small restaurants up the back streets, more fun, more authentic.

If you are in to modern art guggenheim museum is worth a trip.

Water buses are cheap and fun.

Gondolas are an expensive indulgence, any romance ruined as your mental juke box kicks in with "just one cornetto!"

Just come back from a long weekend for our 30th wedding anniversary.

Private water taxi from the airport, is a great (if a little expensive) way to arrive, cost 120 euros but much much quicker than the alilagunna thingy (which we used to get back to the airport.

Other than that, all the advice here is good, we walked for 4 days (and nights) around the main city.

Food can be expensive, if you choose the wrong places, but we had some very acceptable food, bt nothing startling all weekend.

Gondola thing had to be done, went for a "medium" length trip, and ended up in the repatriation of the only victim from venice repatriation after the Paris massacres. Seems the whole city stopped to pay their respects.

Thanks everyone, some great tips. thumbup

I've seen enough on here to totally put me off a Gondola ride, which is a good thing as I don't even like Cornettos.

We've already booked the private water taxi from and back to the Airport and will be going there without any sort of schedule and fully expecting to get lost.

Really looking forward to it.

Ignore this completely.

OK, they are expensive, but not taking a gondola in Venice is like a cream tea without cream... pointless.

My best tip: get up early!
Piazza San Marco at 6.30 am is magical.
No crowds, only the cafe staff quietly getting the terraces ready.
And if you're a bit lucky, fantastic light for photos.

Your significant other would not be impressed if you missed it. Just expect to be fleeced.
