The last few times I have been through the tunnel I have not seen any migrants at all.

I'm driving back just after Christmas but will be crossing around Saarbrücken and heading to Calais. I can't imagine there are any checks happening there.

I wasn't aware of this and merrily went over to France on the tunnel on Thursday afternoon.

30 miles inland I was approaching the Belgian border and.....stopped.

3 hours later, I'd moved about 3km. mad

So frustrating. Once off the motorway and back on again, it was plain sailing all the way to my destination.

Returning Westbound, it's not as bad but there is still traffic. Diverted off the autoroute and found only a small checkpoint and a 2 min delay whilst they checked the car over.

Where did you divert off on your way back Muzz?

The A16 is closed at exit 65 - people diverted off, checked out by the police as you drive past, then straight back on.

I came off at approximately 1 or 2 exits prior to this and onto the D601 I think; parallel to the autoroute on your left and the canal on your right

Through a small checkpoint, then back onto the motorway

This westbound route was at approximately 1500pm. I suspect it's much busier at peak times but still better than being stationary on the motorway

I've been over today, was stopped by the French customs at the most northern check point in France was trying to do a uturn to get some diesel and was picked out, quick check on the car and let on my way, not in and out of the A16/E40 where rammed, hours delay each way. I've seen this now a few times and sitting in the back of the police van drinking is not catching bloody terrorists.

So this is basically a border check just before the border as the next junction heading north is Adinkerke?

Must remember to check this next time I go.

Well there suppose to be checking, all there doing is slowing everything down to a slight crawl whilst they drink whatever and chat in the warmth of there police vehicles, bloody shambles. The petrol station attendant in de-panne told me it'll be like this till after Christmas so be warned, avoid the main border.

Damm , we are booked on the shuttle next weekend for a couple of days in Bruges for the market , having an itinerary worked out to maximise our visit , and also an afternoons shopping in Calais on the way back .looks like our plans are blown out of the water with the predicted delays at the France Belgium boarder, just looked French autoroute /road traffic flow and the 601 is also showing big delays .

Just look at a map, find a road above the A16 and aim towards it. Wasn't that much longer getting to Adinkirke than the normal route, I think Sunday's will quieter as less trucks.

Thanks for the info mate, I will take all the comments here on board and combine them with Google maps.

Cut cross country and cross near Maubeuge? It is quite a nice drive.

So, as I see it the main problem is coming from Belgium and going to the Eurotunnel via the E40 - A16 normal route, correct?

If so then Adenau, Maubeuge, Calais, E420 - A26 looks like a reasonable option, correct again?

I was caught in the three hour delay last Thursday and too avoiding action by coming back along the coast.

You can see the A16 from the road I took and the A16 delays were minor. Lots of trucks are taking alternative routes however so the going is slow on the 'diversion'

Should work. If you have time stop for a coffee in Arras. Beautiful town.

Anyone been through the border on the A27 between France and Belgium just outside Lille to know if it is as bad there? Will be using that route a few times over the Xmas period and wondering how much longer I might need to add to the journey?

Id say that any motorway going through the border has a risk of being patrolled.

I'm planning a trip to Brussels during my Christmas break and have watched this thread with interest.

Looking at alternative routes from Dunkirk, looks like heading to Lille then up to Gent only adds 1/2 hour to the journey.

Can't be doing with 3 hour hold ups.
