If you are visiting the castle you will only be 2 hrs from Munich so visit the BMW museum and then rent a new M for a few hours. They have preloaded itineraries on their sat navs that bring you out some unrestricted autobahn and then down some really nice mountain roads and small lakeside German towns.

Wow, that looks great fun. 3 hours for a hundred or so quid? Especially with a decent route.

The romantic road got its name in the 1950s by the travel agents promoting 'continental' holidays.

We travelled good proportion of it last summer, Neuschwanstein is a must see, but make sure you book tickets for the internal guided tour. We missed it, so need to return this year.

Try here.

and if a Michelin starred dinner is your thing here
http://www.burg-wernberg.com/home/

We drove down through France, over the schwarzwoldhochstrasse, lake constance and into Italy, Lake Como, over the Stelio, and back up through Germany.

Avoid the autobahn round Stuttgart its horrendous. Full of roadworks, and very busy, 5 hours to do 150 miles in 40degree plus temps was not funny.

Drove the RR from Nuremberg to Fussen. A bit overrated in many places but it has its charms in some areas. Fussen, which is the nearest place to the castle, is great as is Rothenburg ob der Tauber which is on the RR heading to fussen. Here's a picture of what Rothenberg is like.

did a germany road trip a couple of years ago.

berlin > dresden > baden-baden > rothenburg > munich

got the train from hamburg to berlin before that... also i think visited a fair few minor places throughout the trip but can't remember all the names! Füssen i do remember though.

The region around baden-baden is seriously beautiful and major wine country... also the spas are phenonemally beautiful and grand... just make sure you go in the nudist one instead of the clothed one as it's a fifth the cost. You're flying without a safety net surrounded by attractive young naked german women though, be warned.

Apologies for assuming. They have men too. Well, there are single gender days, and mixed days.

Personally, I'd take Germany over France or Belgium any day of the week, and I don't see there being a repeat of what happened in Cologne at New Year

The only thing I really noticed when I was there during the summer was the number of migrants coming though Munich's main train station, and that was before the border with Austria was closed. If we hadn't been staying in the Sofitel next to the station, and walking into the city centre I doubt we would have noticed - a friend was also there at New Year at another hotel near the station, and had been pretty much oblivious to what had happened that night. We had travelled into Germany from Luxembourg visiting Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, before heading onto Zurich, and back in via Austria to Schliersee, spending time in Munich and Cologne before heading home.

Outside some of the main transit routes and big cities on that route, I would be surprised if you notice anything at all - I certainly didn't notice anything in Berlin a couple of months ago. The only thing I would bet on you seeing anything would be if you travel back via Calais..

Baden baden is fantastic, the Brenners park Hotel is brilliant, although not cheap.
Sonne Hotel in Fussen is fun, very quirky but good quality and an underground car park (you have to book).

You will love the Castles at Fussen. I didn't go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber because I couldn't find a hotel anywhere that had secure parking. Will have to go there at some point though, looks fantastic in Lionelfs pictures there.
As in all parts of Germany and France, get up early and you can really have fun in the car!

By not taking in Rothenburg I think you've missed the jewel in the crown frown

The hotel I stayed at is in that picture above on the left (and it's annexe is on the right) and it has more than enough parking behind it. So you can actually stay 'in that picture'. You'll drive up that road (on the right in that picture) and pull across to a road on your right which is just out of shot.

It's here: Gästehaus Goldener Hirsch Rothenburg

The breakfast room looks out from high over the town walls across the beautiful countryside.

It's a stunning town with a brilliant museum, superb Christmas shop (open all year) and some lovely restaurants all in a fortified setting high above the surrounding countryside.

Such a shame.

Why on earth would you want to go to Bitburg? It's a dump. Sure, it has a brewery but that's it.

Instead go to Cochem, right on the Mosel, you can drink beer, look at Castles etc. and it's a lovely place (it's also just up the road from the 'ring).

What he said.

Other alternatives would be Metz or Luxembourg.

In Garmisch get the train up and gondola down (or vice versa), tickets are all flexible. Views from top of Zugspitze are superb.

What was the car park like lionelf?
My car is a bit wide, I often find there isn't room in hotel car parks which is why I look spacious underground jobs.

I don't have a map in front of me so don't know where your route takes you but if you are a Petrol head in the slightest and you go anywhere near Sinsheim, There's a rather nice auto and technic museum there.

I'll explain, here's a google picture:

The lovely picture I posted on this thread on the previous page was taken outside of the building that google calls "vanBed & Breakfast" looking southwards.

The main part of the hotel is on the left of the picture - The Hotel Goldener Hirsch and this is where breakfast is looking out over the countryside to the far left.

That building "vanBed & Breakfast" is (or was 3 years ago so probably still is) part of the Hotel Goldener Hirsch but an annexe of it. The outdoor car park behind that annexe with 2 white cars in it is the hotels car park. I stayed in the annexe and could see my car from my room.

Access to the car park is up the street called Wengasse and you drive through what looks to be a solid building in this picture but actually isn't, it's a roofed and gated archway into that car park where the silver car is parked.

Whilst I was there it really was as empty a car park as it shows in that picture so you shouldn't have a problem.

Here's another picture

The Hotel Goldener Hirsch is the Yellow building on the right and Wengasse street is on the left. The annexe is 50 yards further on down on the left.

Thank you! A very comprehensive answer.

I'm looking to do another Bavarian trip next year so I will look at this carefully.
