Hello all. Hopefully if all goes well may be able to get a holiday at some stage later in the year.
Only myself and the mrs, and we are looking at private villas with their own private pools. Plan on spending the days round the pool chilling out, and then going out in the evenings for dinner, exploring etc hopefully in harbour/marina type towns and villages. I've not been to Cyprus before but it appears to tick all the boxes that we are after, and we have found some nice villas in that area on the Solmar and James villas websites.

Anyone been, experiences, recommendations, etc??? Also feedback on the villa websites appreciated as this would be a first for us. Probably looking at mid-late September if all goes well this year, as the temperatures at this time still look ideal.
TIA

Not much help with the Southern Side but have a look at North Cyprus. Its the Turkish part but you can get flights from Stanstead or fly to Larnaca and get a transfer across the border.

Its cheaper than the south as its in the Turkish Lira, people are very friendly and there is lots of history to explore. smile

Lachi and Polis should be, reasonably, quiet at that time of year.
There's a newish harbour/marina at Lachi with a few good restaurants, there are more traditional tavernas in Polis.
If you like peace and quiet, I'd pick Polis, it's quite a trek to the beach but it not as lively at night.
Wherever you end up in Cyprus, hire a car, it's the only way to see the island and get away from the coast.
Get yourselves up in the Troodos mountains, lots of stunning villages and scenery, and some spectacular roads.
Limassol is worth a visit, especially the old town, behind the new marina!
Nicosia is definitely worth a day trip, it's an eye opener, especially the abandoned houses within the "green line"!
Pafos is very touristy and quite expensive, IMO.
The "Rough Guide" book and map are the best ones I've come across!
Oh yeah, don't forget the ice cold Keo!

If you can go in June, early July or early September when the kids are at school then lurk on the James Villas website for the couple of weeks before you go. The prices start to drop and if you can hold your nerve you can get some fantastic deals. I've done it many times (including Cyprus a few times) and got some great bargains. It's not unusual to pick up a villa and flights deal that would be 4K in August for about 1100 quid.

Thanks all for the info, very much appreciated wink The quieter holiday is certainly what we are after and the old towns, marinas and tavernas is what we'll be looking at in the evenings. I will definetly get a car as i do like exploring places when i'm there, it was always the appeal of the old truck driving job.

br d, ta. We are lucky as its just us now the kids have grown up, so we'll deliberately be looking at going in term time smile We can also go last minute luckily, so i'll take your advice on booking last minute if all goes to plan this year smile

Latchi lovely. We went last week in August and the water was incredibly warm.

Take a drive up the Troodos mountains and have a long lunch.

Hire a jeep, not a small family car - those roads up the Troodos are not all good. Not sure if it's still the case but the insurance cover on some of the smaller rental cars didn't cover the unmade roads.

If you drive from Mandria, near Pafos airport, on the F616, or from Limassol, starting on the B8, you can drive to the very top of Mt Olympus, never leave a perfectly good tarmaced road and end up next to the "golf balls", you don't need an offroad vehicle!

I'm a Cypriot staying in Paphos, CypSIdders' suggestions are mostly spot on. Paphos is expensive if you go to the touristry places as most areas but if you're willing to ask around with locals and do some searching online you'll find lots of cool spots to see and activities to do.

A close friend owns a large villa in Argaka village near Polis that he rents out to tourists. I've stayed there too and it's really good, not on the beach though and about 5-10min drive east of Polis. If you're interested send me a message and i'll pass on his info.

As a local i'd also be happy to answer any questions you might have. smile

We want to Polis a few years ago in July or August, I forget exactly, and it was dead quiet.

I can't say I'd rush back to Cyprus, but it was OK - The best days were the ones we went up into the mountains, to be honest.

My daughter was 16-17 at the time and when she walked to the beach alone a few times, she was stalked by greasy middle aged men in cars trying to lure her in, so that was a bit of a negative in my memory.

On the positive side we had a few good days on the sea, once a BBQ and snorkelling trip to the Blue Lagoon, another day we rented a speedboat from Latchi and cruised along the coast and finally we did a try dive one day, back in the Blue Lagoon, which got me hooked on Scuba diving!

We also enjoyed the ruins in Paphos (less the hassling from traders on the sea front) and there was a very good sea food restaurant in Latchi (on the Marina) which we ate in a couple of times.
