Any advice for companies to use for a few days in June. Just after something small for 2 of us for a few days. Planning on going down to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast and exploring.

Have you booked? The Amalfi Coast in June will be very crowded.

they're all a nightmare, so you may as well just go on holidayautos and choose the cheapest, but make sure you get the damage waiver. Mentally prepare for hours (literally) at the desk standing in what italians would call a queue, whilst everyone including the staff shout and wave their arms around at each other. Once you've got the car though, driving is a hoot and in my view it's the best way to get around. Leave your british driving morals at home and drive as they do otherwise you'll get eaten alive. It's liberating.

Haven't brooked anything except the flight so far, will be looking at accommodation this weekend. I know its going to be bonkers and crazy small roads but in a little fiat 500 it should be great fun

I've driven in many countries but never in Italy despite having holidayed there over a dozen times. Why? It's not the crazy driving: it's the nightmare of trying to park and avoiding ZTLs!

When we were there (18 years ago) we didn't bother hiring a car because public transport was soooo cheap! If you want the fun of driving the Amalfi coast road though, I'm sure it will be better than the sickness-inducing bus ride we enduredvomit Got out at Positano before it happened - A delightful place!
As pedestrians we thought the driving looked fine (no worse than UK anyway), just the 'audible parking' left a lot to be desired. We took a ride in a taxi back to hotel one evening, and I said to the driver "Ah Formula Uno", which met with a chuckle as he tailgated the car in front biggrin. Hope you enjoy your holiday. From memory a little town/village near Sorento called Vico Equense has a Restaurant called Pizza a metro - Pizza by the metre! Worth a visit?

It's actually not crazy at all, just an entirely different set of rules and norms. Just adapt, stand your ground and it really is awesome. We had a fantastic time driving, it's really fun. Mrs 2CV was admittedly scared at points but I was laughing constantly! There's a company that rents out classics such as original fiat 500 and Alfa spyder, but you're talking massive deposits, no CDW and £700++ a day!

I hired a Alfa Spider last year with no deposit for £200 a day.

Use Auto Europe for the booking but book with a well known company, look on tripadvisor etc for examples of the bad ones.
Save money on excess insurance by using icarhireinsurance or similar.
Take many photos of condition before and after, make sure they note down even the smallest blemish and make sure the tank is really full before you set off.
Not specifically Naples related advice, just hire car in Italy in general.
If you're flying Ryanair you can actually get some decent car deals when you check in.

I had the classic blue Fiat 500 from the same place... Really nice guy running it- supposedly Top Gear got the Alfa Spiders from him when they did the Amalfi episode

Last Italian car hire for us was with Maggiore through rentalcars.com. Not the cheapest but the car and service were good.

The Amalfi coast drive is amazing.....everyone should do it if they get the opportunity.

Whilst in the area, try to visit Monte Cassino and the war graves....humbling.

I don't usually qualm about driving abroad (and have driven in other parts of Italy), but when we were in Amalfi I was REALLY glad I didn't have a car.

The local bus services are really good, so you don't really need one and parking (not to mention the driving of the locals - cars, lorries, buses and scooters especially) was horrendous.

Wonderful area though.

I once drove to Italy from Munich. On the way down I passed lots of big bikes on the mountain descents, but as night started to fall, I saw some lights zooming up on me as I approached a hairpin, with a rock face on one side and a steep drop on the other.

The car whizzed past me as we entered the blind bend and I noticed a young woman was driving it alone. If anything had been coming the other way it would have been a head on, into the rock face or over the cliff. Her car? An Italian registered Fiat Panda 45!

BUT... the driving in Amalfi was MUCH worse!!!!!!!!!

Pah, you are all big girl's blouses. I drive down there every year and it is epic fun. And I have never had an accident apart from a green pole that attacked me from nowhere. Certainly never with another car.
I pick up a car in Naples and then drive down the coast past a town called Agropoli and zoom about there for a couple of weeks. The Italian driving is interesting and my favourite was driving along the autostrada whilst they were painting the white lines. Road completely open.

Car hire at the airport is utterly mental and hot and involves a lot of shouting and waiting (allow 2 hours)

Unless you are a gold card holder with Hertz. Cannot recommend them enough. Walk in, have a chat and choose a car and then take your keys and go. Used them the last 3 years and will not go back to anyone else now.
