Driving in Norway/Oslo
Discussion
Just returned from a 4 day trip there last week,
No problem driving there, we hired a Mercedes A Class from Sixt, Full insurance cover, unlimited mileage, including tolls came to £240 over 4 days, we were staying in Kongsberg so a good couple of hours away from OSL airport, have heard taxi's are expensive as is most things there

Driving is easy there, relatively low speed limits and good roads. Oslo does get busy though, especially on Friday afternoon heading out.
Speed traps are common (fixed and not very well sign posted average areas) - penalties are HIGH.
As above, if you have no reason to drive, just take the train - quick and easy.

I really wouldn't bother with renting a car to go to Oslo from the airport. Train is much cheaper and generally pretty nice, unlike some of the British ones. Quicker too. You don't need to transfer to get the train as it's connected up to the airport building, and arrives directly in Oslo centre.
Also not sure how it works with rental cars, but Oslo (and Bergen) have introduced diesel "forbidden" days, where if the air quality in the city is too bad they will ban cars/ diesel cars from coming into the city (it can also alternate between odd and even numbers on your licence plate too).
It's been a long time since I took a taxi in Oslo, but it would probably be at least £50+ if you're taking it on your own.

I'm having a 4 night break there in April and was wondering if anyone would recommend driving?
I am landing at Gardermoen so it would take about 50mins? to get to Oslo centre.
If not driving how much are the taxis?
The train is quicker, cheaper and better than driving. Unless you're out in the sticks, then there is absolutely no pleasure to be had driving here. Standards are utterly woeful!I am landing at Gardermoen so it would take about 50mins? to get to Oslo centre.

About 7 years ago I landed at OSL after the last coach had left (trains ended even earlier!) - it was 1 kronor per second (10p per second). Taxi to Lillestrom, about half way to Oslo city, cost about £100!Puggit said:
