Booked a cheap long weekend for 4 days at the start of January in the 3 valleys. First time Ive been there so should be good and will make the next 2 months more bearable until a week later in the season.

Needs a lot more along with a bit of freeze-thaw to consolidate what falls.

If no more falls, and the temps drop low and stay low, there's the risk of depth hoar forming which would cause an unstable layer.

10 degrees temperature difference per meter depth is the magic number.

Ahhhhgghh - Early snow; facebook full of winter wonderland shots of white blankets across the Alpine resorts; locals hiking up to earn-their-turns, in advance of the lifts opening; early openings being announced for limited pistes at many resorts, including some this weekend. Such a contrast to the previous two years.

Yet I'm stuck at my desk, with my first trip not scheduled for another 9 weeks / 2 months! I can't stand the wait!
I shouldn't complain, I suppose smile

Verbier for a week with the family first week of Jan and then possibly the ski trip of a lifetime (for me) ten days skiing in Niseko, Japan in February. Niseko gets about 15m of snow on average each season!

I feel your pain, checking in daily on this thread, reading up on snowheads forum, checking how the Scottish conditions are getting on, thinking my new ski boots and skis are getting lonely tucked away in the cupboard....... cannot wait to get back out in the snow!

19th or 20th season on the bounce in St Anton for me for the annual March visit. Also the Mrs wants to go back there again this winter so its two weeks there starting with a week on Jan 21st. We usually get away first or second week in Jan but after the last two seasons have been pretty crap, we thought we'd go a few weeks later.

The new Flexenbahn links St Anton via Stuben to Zurs now so no need for a bus between the two. They're claiming its now the largest linked ski area in Austria.

This looks really good as a result: http://www.flexenbahn.ski/en/run-of-fame.html

Just booked flights and accommodation for a week of touring in the Lyngen Alps... probably not for everyone but would be keen to hear from anyone that's been there before.

We'll be there for the second week in March so the days should be pretty long and with any luck we should also see the Northern lights. Can't wait.

I live a few hours drive away from there, so been before, wink What mountains are you thinking about doing? And where will you be staying? February is a bit early to get long enough days, but has some absolutely stunning light. March is a good time for skiing, continuing into April (it's usually a bit warmer in April so not quite as good snow conditions but great to be able toskin up in just a pair of shorts and boots!).

It's probably good to take a head torch even then as depending where you are relatively to the sun it might get a bit dark if you are doing a long trip. In addition if you want to see northern lights it might involve walking in the dark to get into a place you can see them best. You certainly have a chance to see them, but it does seem to have been more active before Christmas the past few years. There's been some stunning displays this year so far. Crampons might be useful as due to the coastal climate sometimes it can get a bit hard, but difficult to know for sure. So far the snow is late in arriving properly this year, but the weather was minus temperatures for a long time without any snow on the ground, so will have helped the ground freeze and so be a good base for the snow which will help later in the season.

I guess you know about layering already, but in regards to clothes then we'd normally have one warm baselayer and then some kind of shell thing on top. Then take a hat and down jacket for time on the top, and perhaps a second upper body base layer to swap into to avoid skiing down/waiting in a sweaty layer. Same with the gloves.

That's the Norwegian avalanche rating site. On the top right you can select for it to show the messages in english (often not as detailed as the Norwegian version though). They also have a telephone app which will have an english version of the avalanche forecast. yr.no is probably one of the best forecasts for the normal weather - it has an app and normal website too.

Im wondering though if its abit early to be getting excited especially this early in the season

Quite tempted to see if any of my buddies want to do a fly drive to America in January. If they dont ill probably do UCPA again and go Val Thorens and another place though Europe is looking quite expensive at the moment

Can anyone please recommend the best choices for beginner(me) to intermediate(OH) skiers within striking distance of Milan airport?

Has to be Milan even though there are better alternatives. OH is a terrible flier and that's less than 5hrs on the a380 which makes things it at least feasible for her. Her other suggestion was that we drive from Dubai to Lebanon through Saudi and Syria. Hmmmm,no!

From an initial Google I like the look of Corvara. Anyone been? Any other suggestions?

Not the closest, I don't think, but I'm in Livigno from the 21st Jan. We're flying into MXP.

Folgarida is a bit closer to Milan than Corvara. Been going there annually since my son was 4. Great for beginners and intermediates.

Just booked up a second cheeky ski trip next year - 5 days in Mid Jan Bansko.

Flying Business class and staying in a 5 star hotel with BA Business class flights it's not even £500!!! Game on.

What sort of temp will Bansko have mid Jan?
