Just back from Obergurgl, great conditions for late November.

As usual very quiet pistes and not a lift queue in sight:

Been thinking, my ski helmet is 5 or 6 years old, and I'm wondering if it should be replaced. Does anyone else routinely change out their helmet?

It's not had any serious bangs, but equally hasn't been treated with kid gloves especially.

Every 2 years.
The material deteriorates.

Just in the same way a baby car seat does too so if you think you can keep using it for child after child you are wrong regardless of bumps it's protection degrades.

I can't help feeling that that's over-cautious. I'd challenge to even find a helmet manufacturer to recommend replacing (non damaged/impacted) helmets that frequently, let alone independent advice.

Depends how often you use it IMHO.

If you're a one-week-a-year skier in the mountains and occasional at an indoor or dry slope, then I'd be happy with 5 or 6 years.

If you're a seasonaire and out every day, then I'd probably replace it at the end of the season. UV light is a contributing factor as well as oils/sweat/bodily secretions.

I replaced my last helmet after 2 years. That was after around 20 weeks skiing in total.

Has anyone used Megevexpress? We're looking at using them for our GVA - Megeve tx in Jan, but there are a few internet horror stories...

I just use Quibus they run every 2 hours from GVA. Usually 25 euro per way per person.

Is it worth going on a skiing holiday for just 3-4 days?

no, not quite. depends where in Europe you are looking at.

but theres a very detailed thread running over on snowheads (link below) where some smart people seem to know what they are talking about and put up the charts (colorful pictures I don't understand!). but the charts are currently showing:
Austria getting a little round the 12th/15th dec
Austria maybe into Switzerland a little around the 17th dec
the whole alps next big dump around the 21st dec

now the full weather system breakdown/ massive dump of snow on the 21st is still way off (predicting 2 weeks ahead is very finger in the air). but the charts all seem to agree that weather systems are going to breakdown and something is going to happen round about then....... how much/ where/ how good..... is all in the balance and will hopefully clarify more as the computers keep running the models and the date gets closer.

Most definitely. My lads trip is 4 days skiing each year done over a weekend, so only requires 2 days leave from work. Go hard every day and every night and 4 days is more than enough. It's not the most cost effective trip, but means I can also do a weeks skiing with the family.

Yes I usually do this to catch a weather window but I avoid weekends where possible

I dunno, Saturdays are usually relatively quiet on the slopes as the vast majority of punters are either arriving or leaving. Sundays aren't TOO bad if you're away from the village and obvious bottlenecks as a lot of the package tour mob are still finding their feet.

Thanks. I haven't been in several years, so I figure if I do go most of my time will be spent re-learning the basics again! It would also almost certainly have to be a Sat-Weds.
