So do you rent it for the rest of the year? I have always fancied a chalet somewhere, but just can't get my head around the economics of it all, if you use it twice a year only, then unless there is decent capital appreciation, how do you justify owning vs renting?
I lease it back some years its been fairly good but others say the financial crash and aftermark was brutal very few if any nights used all year for a few years. However this year has been very good last year too - id say the tide tyres back in my favour 2013 (and 2009-2012 we'll literally just covering the annual maintenance fee
Pre 2008 rentals were strong.

Would I do it again ?
Honestly nope

For those who have not yet tried Bansko - this is one perspective.

I'm trying to organise a long weekend somewhere for me and a few mates, I can get flights and car hire but I'm struggling to find accommodation for 3 or 4 nights, anyone got any ideas? Tried Austria and France so far, the only availability is like £1k a night.
Bansko?

A friend of mine just sent me a pic from Sofia Airport where it has dumped 10cm in about 1hr while he was waiting to board his flight...

Last time I checked there was snow all over the place. Did it all melt over Christmas?

We were looking to go in March but there may not be anything left by then frown
There was a lot of high altitude wind which did literally blow a fair amount away

Any skiers here drive or motorhome to their destinations?
I usually Drive and stay self catering.

I'll consider motorhoming it in a few years when I'll have more time flexibility (and maybe the boy is old enough to look after himself), and when I've winterised the truck. The coldest I've used it for was NYE at Glencoe, and numerous races in welsh forests in Feb. But they're not a patch on alpine temps, and they were only for a couple of days at a time
Can it handle mins 30? If not you'd be a very very brace chap sleeping out in it to save a few pennies. Anything goes wrong brown bread.

Worth it?

The snow should finally arrive next week. Forecasts look good for the Alps.
Looking at the live cams in Bansko and the live blogs 6inches fell last night and it's still snowing - big dump Thurs Friday and not expected to stop until mid next week....

Perfect for our skiing.

I've just cancelled my trip to Megeve on 13 - 16 Jan. There is barely any snow cover there and the forecast of 6cm this week is nowhere near enough to make it skiable. The thought of spending £1k+ to sit in a bar for 3 days is just not appealing.
Ouch - 100% loss on the holiday or did you manage to negotiate?

Only a couple of weeks for us and the kids are getting excited. Colorado seems to be OK for snow - they're quoting 120cm powder base and a fall of 40cm in the last two days.
Bansko has 120cm of base currently and increasing.

Been out in PDS today, we had about 5cm of fresh snow last night, not much at all but every little helps. It's skiing really good, not much ice and not too busy. Happy days.

Off piste not there yet, I dropped into a lovely looking little bowl, slashed a turn straight into some rocks and put a massive core shot straight into one of my bases. There's loads open up here as well, hoping to do some more mileage over the rest of the week than today, but my mate is so fking slow and get knackered after 200m of skiing!
lol knackered after 200m of skiing! Are not most runs 5-8km so he's in for a long session.

Usual rules if slow meet you in the bar a la top gear

He said his mate basically hadn't skied before earlier in the thread. It's easy to forget, but it is very tiring at the start! You don't have the confidence to go fast so are breaking all the time which tires you out. Then when you're tired you're not able to brake as much and so lose control and want to brake even more! Just takes time to get the to stage where you can open up and have short periods to relax a bit more between turns and it acts as positive feedback.

Lots of rain today making a mess of things here. There will still be enough snow, but there could be a lot of rain crust once it freezes again.
Missed that - yes starting out is tough going.
Usually 21 days on the snow gets you from total novice to being able to ski down plenty of slopes with ever growing skill and confidence + speed

Has anyone been to Val di Fassa in Italy?

Looking at the webcams it is a bit 'green' at the moment so in March when we were thinking of going it may be pointless anyway frownhttp://www.fassa.com/EN/webcam-val-di-fassa/

To those who have been, how do the prices compare to other European resorts - we have always leaned towards Austria as it is cheap (€5-6ish) enough to have lunch on the hill but for the resorts in France (the last time we went anyway) it was €15-20 per person which is a bit keen.
Wowzers!

Bansko a 500ml beer bottled on the slopes is €2.56 and you can easily get food for much less than hat..

€20 Euros- I've been spoilt Bansko that amount would be a meal up the mountain for 4 plus many beers.

And it has tons of the white stuff at the moment... Changed my booking for Feb...
I know it's had two huge dumps - still snowing and should do most of this week with another heavy fall on Sat.
Will be out there next week happy days. Worried I have enough warm kit for the minus 19-24 degrees excl wind chill it has currently!!

Bansko only has 14 lifts! Would rather spend 3 euros more on beer and go somewhere decent to be honest.
It does and 70km

If you are an expert skier or have oldone a lot I'd say you possibly only need one or two days in Bansko as you could do the whole mountain /unless you wanted to do them again.

Personally until the kids are old enough to ski decently we will wait until we go to a top end reaort it for now as they are learning this is ideal for us. Cheap fun and this year like last year and the year before loads of snow just as we arrive. I'll take the luck

14 sounds a lot to me
A resort like Verbier has access to about 60 I think. Verbier is pretty big, but I dont think it's the biggest.

If you are beginner/intermediate it's wasted a bit! but you can ski for hours and hours without skiing the same piste and that is without off piste.

I am not knocking smaller resorts, it just that they don't cut it for the better skiers.
That sounds pretty epic.

Bansko has 14 lifts + the Gondela, 18 pistes, apparently the odd piste is very good - don't know never tried above my ability
70km of Piste skiing.

I think some of the huge French resorts have 300km of pistes - vast. I guess you need a minimum. Efrain ability within the group to make any benefit of it - given our 2 year old can stand on a snow board only but our 5 year old skied 20miles last year (ski trax iPhone left in her pocket to make sure we could contact her if an emergency).

I cannot wait to try those big resorts

Can't comment on Italy, but I've just paid €17.50 for chicken burger, chips, choc muffin and cup of tea in Austria, at the top of the slope.
How much is a beer?

Not sure, can't drink beer so didn't look. Will check it out tomorrow.
I always find the price of a Beer location to location really gives a fair representation of costs - a bit like the Big Mac scale.

I always have enjoyed summer holidays and naturally look forward to it - but asking holidays well I'm feeling like a child on Xmas eve I literally cannot wait.

Once a year
Great fun
Satisfying
Speed
Always a great apres ski
Up early doors
Everyone talking about things they saw on the pistes
The time when if your lucky you are first up and down a Piste you stand there looking at the untouched Piste.
