I am piston head bald, so would need a hat anyway. Not wearing a helmet is just stupid. Do you wear a seatbelt?

No, not stupid, more freedom of choice and convenience.

A more risk adverse person can advise that you are stupid not to wear a spine protector, full face helmet, participate in a dangerous sport, fly in a plane. They are all levels of risk we choice to do as we enjoy things.

Yes, I wear a seatbelt as it is a legal requirement. As a motorbiker I had the opportunity to bike with no gear in the states and it was an amazing feeling but I compensated by being overly aware of my surroundings and the risk involved.

The more you try to counteract risk the less enjoyable an activity becomes

When we went to Austria last year the ski pass was valid from 3pm the day before the start date and we got a swift hour of skiing int the day we arrived.

Does anyone know if the 3 valleeys does anything similar?

That's interesting. Apologies, I can't help you but we're arriving in Morzine a day early this year and could benefit from such a scheme. Anybody know if anything like that operates in Portes du Soleil?

Just to add a tiny experience to the helmet debate.........

First year I wore one as an example to my kids, about two days into holiday was barged off lift as it pulled away and four of us fell off (red faced moment!). Much general hilarity but as we clambered across and back up, I wasn't paying enough attention and returning lift smacked me in the back of the head.

My fault totally but the dent it put in my helmet was nothing like the one my skull would have had with just a beanie on.

Freak moment but I'm a convert.

I asked last week, our chalet host didn't know, I googled and looked around and could find anything to say yes......

Not as far as I know.

We got to Les Gets in the early afternoon and when we asked the chalet folk told us the pass wasn't live until the morning.

Looked at Bulgaria but the runs seems a little limited!
Just don't risk it, 25 years ago I took the family there as it was cheap and easy to look after a 6 year old out on the slopes.

He and I skied the lot in a couple of days and nothing was anywhere near beyond him then .

I would rather not go than waste my money in Bulgaria.

That is extremely lucky.

Also after the helmet has had a bump it needs to be binned as it's structural strength is gone likewise on age maximum 5 years throw it away. Also never drill or screw in a helmet cam - actually never stick a cam to the helmet either lastly don't put a helmet cam on as if you have a bump in a certain angle that plastic strut will pierce the helmet and... posssibly the skull.

Quite. It was suggested this is what happened in Michael's case.

I can't quite believe that was over 3 years ago now. Poor guy, such a tragic ending to such an incredible life. Sad thing is he never got the send off he deserved. Had he died, a state of national mourning would have been declared in Germany, perhaps even in Italy. There would have been processions, memorials, endless heartfelt condolences. Instead, he is slowly being forgotten about... so sad.

Without a cam he might have had a better outcome sadly we'll never know. But whatever you do never put it on the helmet - it didn't cross my mind until chatting to a fellow skier on a chair lift then it makes total sense of the risks.

And the area he had the accident was the most innocent looking ski area you can imagine, just happened to find a rock.

I started wearing a helmet straight after that.

From what I hear he clipped a rock which caused him to tumble 30m and hit a stone knee height on his head then come to a hard stop in a 7" tall stone a touch further on.

Someone of his skill set probably doing 40mph ish maybe more.
Such accruing shame

It'a something I have wondered about skiing with headtorches. We do it a lot here for some months. A lot use a fixed mounting point, I just use the electric strap. Issue is sometimes it moves and in worst case can pop off. Not a good thing in trees/ random mountainside in the dark!

Putting a camera on a helmet does not have the negative impact you might expect.

Very interesting article, cheers for posting.

The chalet we're using in a few weeks has a go-pro so I have been considering using it and the safety aspect did worry me. Did use one last year using a chest strap for the go- pro and the results were'nt great as I was wanting to video my kids in front of me and naturally my chest wasn't always pointing in the right direction, much easier with a helmet cam I suspect.
