The drive from Chamonix to Verbier is an hour. It's quicker and easier to park at Le Chable and get the lift up to Verbier. No Vignette required. You probably won't need winter tyres in Chamonix in March because it's unlikely to snow down to valley level then. If it does you will need them though because they only do an average job of clearing the roads. If you'd been here two weeks ago you would have needed them for sure. They do a much better job of clearing the road up to Chamonix than they do above Chamonix to GM. They're a legal requirement in Switzerland so don't have an accident if you do go to Verbier.
I was under the impression they we compulsory in Switzerland as well, but Marcellus above says not.I agree about parking in Le Chable - if it's busy going up to Verbier you can go to Bruson for a while until the lifts quieten down.

Sorry if i caused confusion my comments were refering to tyres in Chamonix (iirc the blue chains sign is on the road as soon as the autoroute ends)They do sometimes check in Switzerland and they don't mess around so I wouldn't risk it.

I'll be in Avoriaz at half-term, I find it works out far more affordable doing it DIY than trying to get a package deal for that week
Yeah - I quite fancied Avoriaz this time (tho absolutely nothing available) I have enjoyed the skiing up there, over to Chatel and the Swiss Wall and the big cliff is quite spectacular as a backdrop. As the kids are a bit bigger they would get around better and enjoy the facilities laid on for them. Plus there seems to be some decent self catering places, which I would be happy to do to counteract higher prices and the car free element seems attractive. However, next time, if we go this week, I'll be booking a lot more than 2 weeks in advance, rather than ending up with the VERY last two (expensive) rooms in town!
Missed my early season business trip trip to Washington state this year, so no Crystal Mountain skiing in 2017. But the annual Tahoe trip is booked for March - I see they had a 12 foot dump the other weekend! Scotland has been especially poor, but managed a couple of days so far between the rocks and heather. But on the back of a slow start to the season I'm off to France at the end of the week. Some friends have a chalet with a free bed in La Rosiere so I might end up there. Not sure I fancy the skiing there as it looks a bit limited, but the temptation of free beer of an evening may prove too much.
This year I've had about the only good day so far at Glenshee with full cover and blue skies before the wind/rain took it all away again. Off to Seattle for a conference next Friday so I'll take my skis with me and hopefully get some days in at Crystal Mountain, as usual. Home for a fortnight and then back out to Lake Tahoe. Missed my 'early' week in Europe this year, but hopefully get a last minute trip in if there's still snow late in the season. And fingers crossed for a few more weekends in Scotland.

Much the same as last year, and the year before etc. Nothing like being predictable I did miss out on Whistler last year, but got Crystal Mountain, Morzine and Tahoe plus quite a few days in Scotland...and this year is shaping up to be the same. Not been out this year yet though - planned to pop up to Glenshee on Sunday but the road was closed Maybe next weekend, then the US the weekend after...and so it begins.
Same old same old. Got a few days at Crystal Mountain in Washington last year, a week in Morzine, a week in Heavenly, plus assorted days in Glenshee - some good, some not so good. tvrolet in 2014 said:
Mostly the same as last year...but with my daughter back in the UK there will be no Whistler trips, but hopefully some time at Crystal Mountain on the back of a Seattle trip, then Tahoe (got my season pass ) plus whatever Scotland can offer and maybe a weekend or two in Europe.

I'll have to buy tickets this year again at Tahoe though, and they've changed the dates for passes I think so I can't get a late season pass that covers 2 years now
except this year my daugher is off to Vancouver for a year, so I plan to go out to visit her (and spend some time at Whistler ) late January and again late February - just got to see the weeks my air-miles work out for. So hopefully 2013 is stacking up for an early week in Whistler, another week in Whistler, a wee jaunt to Europe then a week in Heavenly...plus whatever snow Scotland has on offer.tvrolet in 2010 said:

Scotland whenever and where ever there's snow. Had some astonishing days last year including a whole afternoon of fresh tracks in the sun off 'the black run' off Glas Maol at Glenshee
A week or so 'solo' in Feb, probably to the Alps...but I might go back to Colorado if my air-miles can be redeemed when I'm free to go.
Then the annual easter trip to Lake Tahoe/Heavenly - with day trips to Squaw and Kirkwood. We have a shared-ownereship condo in the Marriott beside the gondola (and a 2010/11 season ticket I bought last year that's still good ), so looking forward to that.
And if some other plans come together I might get a few days in Crystal Mountain WA in January too

Booked a week in Ischgal for a week starting 18 March, its a bit late but Ischgal is pretty high so hoping it will be fine!
Assuming you're actually going to Ischgl in Austria no, the 18th March isn't 'a but late', it's core season. There's another 5 weeks of opening after you come home from your week.//j17 said:

There's another 5 weeks of opening after you come home from your week.Off to Sauze D'Oulx on Thursday for a cheeky weekend so looks like we're in for a fresh fall at last, didn't think I would be worrying about snow for this week when we agreed to go. Hopefully no white-outs as we're having a guide / tune-up / off-piste lesson on Saturday, first one in 25 years
Anyone done the drive from Malpensa ? Should be 2-2.5 hours according to Google.

lots of helpful stuff about Cham
Thanks very much, I was hoping that being later in the season it might be better.I will get chains without a doubt, but a spare set of wheels and tyres for a car that is going back in 18 months is a big outlay.
we have 4wd (kinda) so getting out of car parks shouldn't be too bad, I guess as long as we get there ok, we can check the weather and then if its nasty use the bus!

worst start to season ever so far Geneva 2 hour regions
Fantastic skiing in Tignes and Val d'isere this week, particularly today under blue skies and scorching sunshine. However, I forgot how much of a pet hate it was to find dimwits who push and hustle their way forward in any lift queue only to then stand stationary in everyone's way while they wait for their mates or besties to catch up before actually taking the chairlift. Grrrr!!!
