Just back from 4 days in Grindelwald via Munich for tuesday and wednesday. Pistes were fine, but bare in patches with a few of the main routes still closed due to lack of snow.
Had a good dump on Sunday night through to Monday tho, and ended up with knee to thigh deep powder in the off piste areas, and about 6 inches of fresh on prepared bases on piste on Monday.
Off to Avoriaz for half term tomorrow. The promised metre of snow that was due to fall this week seems not to have appeared although conditions do look better.
Fingers crossed it'll be more than just piste work this time
Was in Avoriaz on Monday and Tupesday; it was snowing like a pig.Had a good dump on Sunday night through to Monday tho, and ended up with knee to thigh deep powder in the off piste areas, and about 6 inches of fresh on prepared bases on piste on Monday.

Les Gets has had a hug amount and having spent yesterday and today there, I can assure you, there is more than ample. Loads of powder still laying around.
Back up to Avoriaz tomorrow, to check it out.

Getting very close to pushing the button on a week in St Anton from March 25 - April 1. Have been there a few years ago so know about the resort but will the snow be OK around that time? Seems to be plenty there at the moment.
Will be fine high up, maybe a bit sparse and icy in resort.I once spent a weekend there AFTER Easter (Shut the following weekend, I think) and it poured with rain the first day.
I'd booked a room already, so didn't go home (Was living in Germany at the time) and awoke to 3 or 4 inches of powder down to the resort and crisp blue skies - One of my best day's skiing ever!

Looks like the Avalanche protection bank did it's job in protecting the resort and pistes but possibly contributed to the risk of not being able to get away from the slip... all pure speculation of course.
As for the topic, I've got a day on Wednesday in the Portes du Soleil...... possibly that may be my lot for this season for one or two reasons.... so much for owning a ski business so I get to spend my seasons skiing

Good write up about the Tignes avalanche here: http://pistehors.com/serious-avalanche-at-tignes-2...
I think this quote sums it up for me:
'Didier Givois describes the slope as "one of the most dangerous in the Espace Killy... not somewhere to ski on a risque 3 day, the result of any slide being catastrophic due to the earthwork forming a terrain trap, powder at that price is too expensive."'
I also just quickly read the avy forecast for today, warned of wind slabs on NW facing slopes. This avy occurred on a NW facing slope. Obviously the guide was very experienced, and knows far more than me, but certainly makes you think. I've looked up at that zone many times and its obviously a bad place to do be in the wrong conditions.
I'm planning to do some proper avalanche training this season but I'm now going make that a priority.
I would recommend EVERYONE who skis off piste at least get a tranceiver, shovel and probe and learn how to use it, I wear my tranceiver every day even if I'm not planning to go off piste, so I have it if I do decide to go off piste, and secondly so I could potentially assist if I do see an avalanche.

Wife 3.0 has maintained that my skiing adventures will not take place this year, primarily due to the fast-escalating running costs associated with 1yo daughter 2.0
Spurred on by you lot I 'manned-up', took a big handful of brave-pills and put my foot down with a firm hand. I marched straight up to her, looked her squarely in the eye and...
...begged to be allowed at least a cheap weekend. Finding someone to go with was a small issue because most folk had used up their quota, were booked already (with no spare flight/ transfer to join on their packages) or just didn't fancy skiing (huh).
Up stepped 18yo son 2.0 to save the day with annual leave to spare and Borovets now beckons 1st week in March!
No problem keeping up with him on piste as he's never been before, but in the bars might be a different story.

Thats St Anton booked for March 25 for 1 week. We were last there in February 2011 and it was bitterly cold. Expect it to be a bit warmer this time wound and interesting to see whats changed.
Going to attempt the run of fame now all the resorts are linked up although not sure how to get back from Warth: http://www.flexenbahn.ski/en/run-of-fame.html

Make sure the instructor explains how stuff works at the beginning and if you don't understand what they're saying, ask what they mean.
Don't be afraid of a bit of speed, as it's hard to turn going very slowly, and remember that a bad day skiing is still 100 times better than a good day at the office.

think the season is over sub 2000m resorts swiss/French alps ...within 2 hours from gva ...unless it snows in march
its 15c here in town gva
and pure sun for next 10 days
Go east to Bansko loads of snow and it's a 2,500 m max (resort 900m). its 15c here in town gva
and pure sun for next 10 days
Think of different locations/chase the snow don't simply go the usual or have to stump up FMSO much more £ for Gstaad or the top end mega height resorts.

I'm inclined to agree with you, just spent 4 hours in Morzine, Avoriaz, Chatel and Champery OK early on but as it warmed up very Spring like with wet heavy snow and quite a bit of Brown/green/grey where it shouldn't be.its 15c here in town gva
and pure sun for next 10 days
