It seems Tignes has experienced another avalanche that has claimed some skiers. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39192167
Sounds like it's off the top of the Tichot lift in Val Claret from what I can see & on piste too. Busy run back to VC if so.

Crikey, Carline is a blue run, one I've skied many times, not one I'd expect to be an avalanche risk.

In fact with a risk of 4/5 it is one that I would be staying on as I would consider it relatively less risky. frown

Looks like this years' conditions (a lot of aged, icy snow followed by a recent huge dump) has led to a very unstable snow pack.

Buried a lift queue so we hear, although other reports stating no casualties.. Managed to check in with all our guests.

BBC now saying no victims, rescue over. Seeing vids of heavy dumps there, so I guess loose new snow over the pack.

Bloody scary if it's on piste

from some of the stuff I've read it was a slide that went across the piste, not that the actual blue run slid.

I worked seasons in Tignes & still have loads of friends living there, always the same frisson of fear when there's a slide, although anyone who's done a season knows the novelty soon wears off & if it's grey & dumping, you're going to give it a miss when you're not limited to a week or two hehe

I'm just glad no one was hurt in this one.

Where is great in the U.K. (south) to practice ?
There are indoor ski slopes at Hemel Hempsted and Milton Keynes....daft that the only two near London are half an hour from each other but they're both busy!
I've never been to either how good are they?
How many runs/what sort of gradient do you get (guessing mild Green runs equivalent)
Both around 100m long. Blueish gradient at the top to green at the bottom.
Both have two pomas.

Snow conditions are similar although folk will often claim one is better than the other. They can get icy at busy times when the snow gets scrapped off the refrigerated base, but both get pisted from time to time to help

For what little difference it makes, I prefer the atmosphere at Hemel as it's a dedicated skiing/boarding centre with an alpine feel to the cafe/bar, whereas MK Snozone is in a shopping centre and feels more soulless as a result
Hemel has a nursery slope too...can't remember whether MK has. They're certainly long enough for it to be worthwhile I'd say. My 8 yr old son gets to go skiing at Hemel every Friday afternoon as his nominated "activity" at school...tough life!
They both do, and the MK slope has a magic-carpet lift for that slope
However, access to the nursery slopes in both venues is strictly limited to those on lessons

Just back from a stag weekend in Morzine. It was raining hard in the village Saturday afternoon, Sunday / Monday but great snow up high & lots of it.

They shut the entire lift system across Morzine / Les Gets on Monday at ~ 2.30pm due to a thunderstorm. Never experienced skiing with thunder and lightening flashing around us ! Also skiing with hailstones isn't pleasant ! Didn't stay long.....straight back down to the village !

We were caught in that at the top of Troncs with the kids. Great fun climbing under and over the felled trees whilst trying not to get struck by lightening.

However, I was recounting our daring story of adventure to a couple we met in the airport on the way home on Sunday. I'm guessing they were circa 65 years old and she then showed me a video of her abseiling out of a gondola the day before. They were in Les Contamine, the lift broke down and they had to rescued. Pissed all over my chips royally. smile

I was in Mayrhofen two weeks ago which was great, and I'm off to Madonna de Campiglio on Saturday for a week cool

I've specifically avoided France because it's got so utterly eye-wateringly expensive. Never been to Italy in my life before though.

We are off to Courchevel 1850 on Friday and the latest webcam pics makes it seem like we are in for a great week. My legs have just had time to recover from being in Tignes a few weeks ago. Blue skies and sunshine would be nice.

Off to Munich (and thence to Garmisch-Partenkirchen) in 21 hours smile

Miraculously it's been snowing there and more is forecast, so it could be pretty OK! biggrin

Mayrhofen was a long weekend so 2 days AL.
Madonna is 5 days AL.

So 7 days.

I also get 31 days AL, plus bank holidays.

Was in Sauze d'oulx a couple of weeks ago and it was half the price of Courcheval (which I know is a bit more expensive than a lot of other French resorts).
€1.50 for a coffee at Sportina

....and nicer food and friendlier people- only real downside was the lift system isn't as good but then again very few queues
