Planning holiday soon? Come to Montenegro ;)
Discussion
Planning a holiday or just a weekend off in April/May? I invite you to come to Montenegro. The place is really not crowded before June, weather will be very nice (usually 20+ with just a few rainy days). Prices are also much cheaper than in high season. Air tickets are quite cheap too these days and it's a relatively short flight.
Oh forgot to mention that we are very safe, no terrorism at all(sadly it became an important factor lately).

We visited Montenegro two years ago, loved it. Some fantastic quiet driving roads in the north of the country. Beautiful scenery and friendly people. Although we went white water rafting near the Bosnian border and the people there were a bit "deliverance"
Only had a few days as it was part of a holiday including Croatia but will definitely return.

Such a beautiful place, and not yet a really popular destination. However, the food and the music... Not so great. I mean "turbo folk" I can handle but I don't really want to put up with 'tourist food'. Will still come back though!
the music is indeed awful at some places but it's because of balkan tourists...it's quickly changing though since we get more tourists from western countries latelynot sure what you consider "tourist food"? Beach stands with grill sometimes smell "strange" if that's what you mean although reputable restaurants have very quality food, and not all of them are expensive.

Funny you should mention it.... we have been looking into Montenegro for a holiday this year. Any tips/recommendations etc?
it depends on what you prefer and how long you'll stay...I recommend mountain trips, some rafting on Tara river, going through Nevidio canyon..it's amazing experienceif you are a beach person then finding some remote non-crowded beaches would do, renting a small boat is a good idea

Don't mention the war...
haha yeah, the people here have very different views about it and some act emotionallyalthough there luckily wasn't war on our territory during this Balkan turmoil

Isn't that where Casino Royale is? sounds dangerous.
haha there are several known casinos mainly in Budva and nearby, dangerous for your pocket if you can't control yourself cardigankid said:
I was just thinking of driving to Montenegro in July.
Will it be very busy? Is it full of Russian Mafiosi?
Where would you recommend staying? Are hotels expensive? What's the currency?
huh..I guess it will be very busy in July especially on the seaside, better plan coming at night if you don't want getting stuck in trafficWill it be very busy? Is it full of Russian Mafiosi?

northern parts of the country will be OK though, we are reconstructing all important roads now so driving should be pleasant
Russians behave OK here, they can sometimes be tiresome and trashtalk when they're drunk but ignoring will always do the job. However if you engage in some illegal business with them it's only your responsibility then.
If you don't like noise and crowd I'd recommend smaller places/apartments. They also tend to be cheaper and atmosphere more relaxed than in hotel. Pay attention on reviews when you book.
The currency is EUR and we've been using it since its introduction in EU...the funny thing is that when you enter Montenegro from Croatia you leave EU and at the same moment start using EU currency since Croatia still uses kunas.
you have bungee jumping on Tara too

then going through canyon Nevidio is amazing experience although you should be in solid shape for doing it (and not slowing down the group)

there is adventure park in Cetinje(you should visit the city too as it's historical)

biking through mountains is also what many foreigners prefer, all in all lot of outdoor activities in northern parts of the country, but yeah adriatic coast is very nice too, especially islands and remote areas
other places are better for it, Ada Bojana which is more to the south, then Virpazar, Cetinje, Zabljak etc.

by tourist food i mean like the "pizza, steak, pasta, burger etc" choices. There seemed to be a lot of those restaurants, and very few offering local cuisine. We struggled to really find what local food might be! This was in Kotor though.
well, Kotor is really not known for domestic cuisine although there are couple of restaurants serving national mealsother places are better for it, Ada Bojana which is more to the south, then Virpazar, Cetinje, Zabljak etc.
I must admit that I have no desire to visit some kind of Magaluf on the Adriatic which is what it sounds like.
I read about some offroad tours combined with some rafting on the Tara River, and nights round the camp fire. That sounds good but I need to keep it sensible as I have a family with me.
What I really need is a good hotel somewhere with plenty of good food, top quality accommodation, swimming pool, maybe tennis courts, that would be a good base for some exploring. If the traffic is shocking in summer, like it is in the Lake district or Cornwall with the caravans, maybe I would be better somewhere inland or less popular.
Aman Sveti Stefan looks nice but the kids have to be able to relax. Its expensive, but if your holidays are limited the important question is more 'is it worth it' than 'how much is it'.

Splendid is also excellent, hotel Regent Porto in Tivat too...if you can afford it.
I'd recommend this hotel if you love tennis (which is not really popular in Montenegro although Djokovic family is actually from here)

it's very fairly priced for high season and its location

Went to Kotor area last year (Tivat, Budva as well, though I thought the latter was a bit of a dump). Bloody brilliant and Dubrovnik is just a short trip up the coast and easily doable for a day trip. Lovely part of the world. We stayed in an apartment that was in a small complex and is rented out, if sharing with others its a good way to do accommodation IMO. It was just across the water from Kotor's old walled town thing. Very nice place to stay.
here have some pictures (mine)

Porto Montenegro is very posh and new (and a bit American false oppulence, but then it is the brainchild of an American billionaire and is a place for wealthy yacht owners to keep their boats over winter). But there is a fish restaurant on the water front near the old Kotor bit and its amazing. Sea Bass baked in a mountain of salt, then cracked into and prepared at your table. Amazing. And even more amazing was the steak! super fat fillet for about 10 quid! That'd have been about 3 times that in the UK!
