Now before you say it no i'm not going on a lads holiday!

For my girlfriends dads 60th he's decide to go to Ayia Nappa (they've been before and love it & say its a quite hotel). We're going on the 18th May for a week so hopefully all the dheads won't have turned up by then.

What i'm after is although we are both only 26 we will probably want to go and explore a bit but i've never been before and would love to know where to go and where to avoid, obviously the strip for starters.

If anyone knows any good restaurants too that would be ace!

Hire a car and explore the interior!
Head towards the hills and Troodos, spectacular scenery, views and driving, the roads will be virtually empty on weekdays.
Unfortunately I don't know the Ayia Nappa area, however if you're prepared to travel, there's a fantastic seafood taverna at Ayios Gerogios Alamanos, (find it on google maps), it's east of Limassol so it would be quite a trek from Nappa!

Ayia Nappa is nice enough, but it's on the extreme east side of the island. The mountains & most of the historic stuff of interest is in the west though, so if you want to go on excursions you'll be travelling a lot.

I don't suppose it has changed much since I went there, but going to the Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus is difficult & probably best avoided. I think you can do it at Nicosia, which is the only divided capital city in the world these days. If you do go, it's best not to mention it to any Greek Cypriots if you want to avoid dirty looks.

A little way out is Protaras which is a bit more tame but still has a decent strip, beaches and nice bars and restaurants. I went that sort of time 3 years ago (albeit on a lads holiday!) and although there aren't nearly as many knobheads as at the height of summer, a lot of the workers are just arriving and still in "holiday mode." The best thing is to hire quad bikes as it is only about a 15 min ride from Ayia Napa. If you carry on past protaras you can get to the UN de-militirized zone where you can see the remains of Famagusta and go to the museum which although a bit rundown, is still worth a visit!

I went about 8 years ago on a lads holiday - I'd definitely recommend visiting Famagusta.

What kind of things are you interested in? You will need to hire a car of course. Majority of 'interesting' stuff is away from the Agia Napa/Protaras area.

A list from a recent thread contribution:
- Kourion amphitheatre/archaeological site
- Troodos Moutains (general visiting of various villages, plus some of the driving roads are ace)
- Painted monasteries of Troodos (highlight imo)
- Kykkos Monastery Troodos
- Roman mosaics of Paphos
- Cyprus Museum in Nicosia
- Icon Museum in Nicosia
- Aphrodite's rock
- Larnaca Finikoudes for an evening stroll

- Around Agia Napa, Cape Greko is worth a look. Very nice view.
- The Thalassa museum in Agia Napa is pretty decent if you're interested in boats and seafaring.

All good advice.

Cyprus is small enough to explore in a week with a car (not all of it, but certainly see areas all over the island).

We stayed on the NE coast and it was lovely and quiet, but that's very different to Ayia Nappa! biggrin

We went to a monastery in the mountains, where we had to wear a cloak type thing to cover our knees, but a Russian woman was wearing 'pedal pusher' type things which covered her knees and apparently her impressively (and extensively revealed) cleavage was of no concern (I'm not complaining, I hasten to add, just baffled that knees were so offensive and yet breasts - Very distracting to monks one would think - were fine! biggrin).
