NYC - Waldorf Astoria, Crowne Plaza Times Sq, or....?
Discussion
I'm in NY right now. Would really recommend NOT staying in/around Times Square. Far too busy/tacky.
I'm currently staying in the Andaz 5th Avenue, which is very pleasant - big rooms, complimentary soft drink minibar and good service. Very relaxed atmosphere. It's a a few blocks too far south for my liking though (41st).
If I was staying for a week with a family I'd definitely consider an AirBnb, perhaps somewhere on the upper east side.

We stayed at the Roosevelt which although a little dated in places was clean, tidy and a quiet location.
My friend travels to NY for work alot and he stays in the Ace Hotel http://www.acehotel.com/newyork? which looks very good.

Or at least in that area. You want to be able to walk to and from your hotel when you go out for dinner/evening entertainment.
