I'll be in Liverpool for 24 hours. What should I see/do when I'm there?

Arriving at around 4pm on a Friday, and plan to go for a night out, then the next day wake up slowly with a wander around some recommended places in Liverpool.

The latter part of that I can probably work out myself, but open to recommendations. It's the first part I'm more interested in - the best places to drink!

I'm happy as long as it's somewhere with good ale (especially a good porter), but would ideally like somewhere lively as well (I'm only 31 after all!).

So, recommendations for places to drink?

I plan to head back to Liverpool at some point, but would be good to make sure we don't miss something good. We'll be there in July.

Thanks for any help!

Off the top of my head....

Pubs
- Philharmonic Pub (even if it's just to gawp at the decor)
- Clove Hitch
- BrewDog
- Berry & Rye (also known as Mordor's P0rn Shop from the outdoor decor) which is a 20's speakeasy style bar

Food
- Lucha Libre (great Mexican street food)

Sights
- Liverpool One
- Albert Docks
- Beatles stuff
- Angelican Cathederal & Paddy's Wigwam if architecture is your thing

You have to book in advance, but I would highly recommend doing the Mersey tunnel tour if you can fit it in.

You don't have to be a civil engineering buff to find it absolutely fascinating - a unique opportunity to have a good nose round behind the scenes of an incredible feat of engineering - in particular seeing the refugee rooms.

The best £6 you will spend in Liverpool...

eta I would second the recommendation to try the Philharmonic...

If you like your real ale....

Ferry is always worth a trip on the circular route rather than the straight across and back

it is possible, if you're nice to the guys on security (or know someone) to get a private tour of the liver building, which is rather incredible. Don't bother with the Williamson tunnels, they are out of town and are pretty unimpressive. Many very old and very interesting boozers, including one with a 12th century hearth complete with graffiti from many hundreds of years ago. One of the roof gardens such as "oh me oh my". Panoramic bar has a fantastic view. Museum of liverpool is actually very interesting and quite self-deprecatingly funny in places. Cathedrals are pretty unbelievable as those types of things go.

Pubs I'd recommend are:
Philharmonic, Ye Cracke, Belvedere, Peter Kavanagh's, Roscoe Head, Grapes Dispensary, Ship & Mitre, Lion at Moorfields, Rigby's, No 1 Bridewell. That should keep you occupied for a couple of hours.

Bookmarked this, me and the Mrs are here on Friday for 3 nights, staying up the road at the titanic spa place.

Glad the weather has picked up!

Just wanted to follow this up and say thanks for all the suggestions. We had a great time in Liverpool, although can't quite remember everywhere we went. We ended up in something called 'Level' I think, which was a dive of a place but good fun.

Early in the evening we went to a few places. Tried the Phil, but thought it looked rubbish, so went down the road to the Fly in the Loaf, which served good beer.

We had dinner at Bakchich which was fantastic (and very good value) and breakfast at Moose Coffee, which was one of the highlights of the trip in fact!

Spent the morning on Albert Dock, and had a look in the Tate. They also had 'Vintage on the Dock' running, which was excellent.

All in all, a great 24 hours (well, nearer 16...) in Liverpool.
