Good evening everyone,

My Grandad lives in Brisbane, Australia and has always mentioned that I should go over for a few months and travel around and see the sights.

After recently being made redundant at my job, and still being only 21, I thought maybe I would take a year out to travel around Australia and work while I am over there.

I would be applying for the Working Holiday Visa ( Subclass 417 ), so can stay for 1 Year, maybe 2 if I meet the criteria and wanted to stay.

Has anyone ever done this or something similar?

First Major question I have is how much money do you think I would need to save before I went? Obviously I know it depends on what I want to do out there, but a just a rough idea to be able to get around locally and sample some local attractions and food.

I dont have any major qualifications, so work wise I would either be doing agriculture or sales, as that is what I have been doing in this country, is the wage out there decent in comparison to the cost of living?

Finally is there any must see things you guys recommend? Even if It was in a nearby country.

Hope you can help!

Cheers biggrin

From our trips out there the basic cost of living is around the same as here, it's a starting point anyway.

I spent 2y there a looooong time ago and it was the best thing I ever did

Cant remember the small print but I didnt have much cash stashed away and also flew in with a one way ticket after getting my visa sorted, I figured if it all went wrong I could buy a return on a credit card

I stayed with friends of friends in a communal doss house for a week or so and then rented a room in a shared flat, all very easy

When I earned money I spent it and when times were hard I didnt

After a year being based in Melbourne I travelled and stayed in hostels for a few months doing a bit of ad hoc work as able and then bought a ticket home via Asia where you really didnt need much cash at all

Go for it!
