This has probably been asked a million times but I'm buggered if I can find any threads.

We've never been before but myself and the wife are planning of a 6 day trip there this October.

Any tips on Hotels to look at that are close to where it's all happening but not too dear? Also any must see attractions and any that aren't really all that?

And any other advice? smile

Thanks in advance. smile

Keep away from Time Square - too busy. By all means visit it and catch a show on broadway but we stay Upper East side by the park.

Get your 15% discount voucher at all the big Dept stores - Macys, Bloomongdales etc.

Definitely get the tour buses - very entertaining guides and very funny (except round ground zero where everything goes quiet).

If you go up the Empire State Building there is only one thing you cannot see. Go up Rockerfeller instead.

Five years since I went so apologies if anything has changed.

Give me a better idea of what you do/do not enjoy doing (tourist stuff, eating, shopping, culture - do you enjoy just strolling through neighbourhoods taking in the atmosphere or would you rather be taxi'ing from one attraction to the next, ticking off your guide book?)

I'll see if I can then find some time in my everso busy schedule of pottering around the house to form a response thumbup

I stayed just off Times Square in a small hotel with small rooms and reasonable prices. Great location, nice and clean.

Highlights apart from the obvious touristy things:-
Staten Island Ferry for a cheap boat trip
Walk across the bridge to Brooklyn and grab a Grimaldi's Pizza (packed not posh).

Thank you, I am honoured. thumbup

Basically we would like to spend 6 days there wandering around looking at the famous sites and probably getting a bit drunk. Using Taxis or the underground wouldn't be a problem. smile

Food and good bars are pretty important, as is not getting mugged. We travel quite a lot so don't really need someone trying to sell us a selfie stick every five yards.

I'd like a room with a decent skyline view if possible.

One Hotel that I have found that seems pretty reasonable is this one, €1,400 for five nights in an upper level room with breakfast. Any opinions?

Why not buy a guidebook and use a post it note for everything you want to see, then pass it onto the other half for her to do the same and see how many are the same, then do these?

We went last August for 5 days, was bloody hot! October should be fine.

Don't miss the Highline:

We also visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, although if you want to go up into the crown, you have to book a few months in advance:

Worth getting a New York City pass, which gives you discounted access to many attractions.

Oh, and we came back on the Queen Mary 2, which was an experience in itself!

We stayed in the NY Marriott downtown when we went. Big beds, cheaper rates, and a good view uptown.

Only downside was a 15 min ride on the 1 train from Rector street up to Times Square.

All the landmarks are spread out so it is upto you where you stay. I stayed on 54th Street at the Ameritania Hotel and enjoyed it there.
Not far to walk or taxi to Broadway/ Time Square/ Central Park.
We went the theatre twice when we went in November so were glad to stay in the middle of Manhattan (just below Central Park)

The metro is $30 I think for the week. Definitely use it. We used it quite a bit and still walked 40 miles over the 6 days.

Hi,

been several times (business) but as others have said avoid Times Square for somewhere to stay - overpriced, and TBH full of tourists/and tut so avoid.

I usually stay here Club Quarters Midtown Ideally placed and rooms are larger than average, prices not too bad either.

If you're budget is higher/you're after Boutique hotels stay here Conrad

But TBH you're better just looking online/lastminute.com's map of hotels and filter by rating/price as only you know what/where you want to go/do.

I stayed at the Gershwin years ago and it was great. Just around the corner from the Empire State Building and a great position for lots to see.

If mem serves it was on the corner of 25th and seven.

Following with interest as we're off to New York in two weeks time in the build up to a work thing that only came up last week so had no time to prepare! Nowhere to stay just yet and wondering how many days is sufficient to see the usual attractions?

Keep them coming chaps, thank you very much so far thumbup

I guess my hotel suggestion in my last post hasn't met with approval then, with it being on Times Square?

Not sure about the hotel but don't pay for breakfast at any hotel- There are so many breakfast places to eat out and that is part of the NY experience for me.
